Rendering to WMV not matching output aspect ratio

I have a fairly simple project DV Widescreen NTSC project:
track1 - title overlay
track2 - video
track3 - audio
tradk4 - still image

I have chroma-keyed the video and set the sill image to match output aspect ratio. Everything looks good in preivew and looks good if I render to .AVI or any other format.

However, when I render to .WMV using any of the standard template the track4 image gets letterboxed on top and bottom. So what I get is the chroma-keyed video looking good in the middle but surrounded by black on the top and bottom instead of the image on track4 which only cover the middle of the screen.

Anyone else experience this or have any idea how to fix?

Did you try to render everything in a new track in DV before wmv compression?

Widescreen can sometime have this kind of unlogical behavior because there are different ways to produce widescreen video..

I have had similar problems when rendering directory to WMV--but using standard 4:3 ratios. Everything seems fine, but my text that should scroll in and out from the edges of the screen starts about 1/4th the way in / out of the edges. See video at http://www.chanimal.com/videomaker/ChanimalPromo.wmv

I can fix this by first rendering to AVI, then rendering the AVI to WMV format. Am I doing something wrong with this? I don't recall having this problem in earlier versions.

render settings can override project settings

I am a nube, but I had this problem with a Canon HD cam....
The camera is set to 1920 x 1080... footage in SV ends up actually being 1920 x 970. I adjusted all other media to 1920 x 970 and no letterbox.

still figuring out render options..

You are working in DV Widescreen. That has a pixel aspect ratio of 1.2121. (Normal DV is .909. Neither is square, or 1.000)

You need to change the pixel aspect ration in the WMV Video setup.

After you select your template, click "Custom" to the right under Save. There you will see tabs with Project, Audio, Video, Bit Rate and Index/Summary.

Select the Video tab.

Most likely, it will have a Pixel aspect ration of 1.000 (Square).

Change it to 1.2121 (DV Wide Screen) and then render.

You will know it's right because the preview screen as it renders will fill the preview window. If you still see black bars top/bottom or sides, you need to fiddle with the PAR a bit.

Another option is to leave the PAR in the WMV setup at 1.000 (square) but change the Image Size from "(Keep Original Size)" to a wide screen shape.

Pull down the Image Size down arrow and select "(Custom)"

Enter a wide screen dimension like 720x405 or 640x360 or 320x180.

This should fill your screen properly.

By the way, if the video is too big (in megabytes) select CBR (Constant Bit Rate) in the Mode box then go to the Bit Rate tab and enter a bit rate manually.
