Rendering - video quality slider

When I go to render, if I click on the custom button, it opens up some tabs. On the Video tab, there is a slider for video quality that is set in the middle by default. I noticed this slider's position doesn't change when I set best quality versus good quality on the main rendering menu. Has anyone used this slider at the highest setting, and does it make much differnce in quality or rendering speed?

1. If your goal is to create a DVD, ALWAYS use one of the DVD Architect template presets when rendering.

2. All the DVD Architect templates have that quality slider all the way to the right. Keep it there. Your project will render faster if you move it to the left, but the video will look lousy. The only reason I would ever use this control is if I needed to get a quick look at something, but was never going to show it to anyone else. The quality difference between the middle and far right settings is not subtle.

3. The "good" and "best" settings actually control what Vegas does with the video prior to sending it to the MPEG-2 encoder. Use "good" for most rendering. Only use "best" when rendering video from sources that are higher (or lower) resolution than the resolution of your final render. For example, if you are starting with NTSC DV video (720x480) and are rendering to an NTSC DVD, then use "good." However, if you have lots of high-resolution still photos, or are starting with HDV and then down-res'ng to SD, then use "best."

If you are authoring in a program other than DVDA, be sure to check the "Save as separate elementary streams" checkbox in the System tab of the Custom menu. This is not checked by default in the DVDA templates and can really burn you come time to author.
