Rendering vs Encoding

Can someone explain the difference!
If I capture in DV AVI via Firewire, and then want to use Ulead movie Factory to do the menu's ect, which output is the best , ? burn DVD puts out AVI, or should I save to disk as raw DVD format or MPEG 2 ?

MPEG2 is the DVD format, so you've only got 2 choices (I'm assuming you're only going to produce DVDs, not VCDs or SVCDs). I think it comes down to which gives you the best combination of speed and quality. It's probably quicker overall to produce MPEG2 directly from MS, but you may find you prefer the quality of the Ulead encoder. Try both and see what happens - you should choose a few seconds of video with as much movement and detail as you can get.
