Unless a newer one has been published, it supposedly repairs a
problem with entering the authorization code when installing the
retail version of Vegas Pro. Tech support advised us to run it
immediately after installation and before attempting to run the
software the first time.

Nothing key, apparently ... unless you consider being able to install
and run the sofware, "key". :)

KAC ...

Vegas Pro uses a newer, more aggressive licensing policy than that
used with prior SF products. When you install Vegas, you are given a
7-day trial period after which the program switches to "demo" mode.

You can, at any time, enter your license code (obtained from the
server at this web site) to remove all restrictions from the package.

There appears to have been some confusion between the commercial
version of Vegas and the free beta version available immediately
prior to the release; when you enter the code, you get a message
stating that the time has expired for the license (presumably, this
refers to the free beta test period which has now elapsed).

You run the "repair utility" and re-enter the code and everything is
as it should be. I suspect the next release will have the correct
version of the license routine already in place.

Thanks guys.

I was hoping it had something to do with the messed up SMPTE
implementation...

What are problems are you having with SMPTE? I read and responded to
your problems with the Dakota, but never heard back from you on this.

Name it...I've had it! Blue screens, page faults in Vegas.exe, mouse
freezes, tracks that drop out of record in the middle of a take,
takes that are slipped forward or back in time (i.e. NOT in sync),
playback that continues in Vegas even after timecode has stopped and
I have clicked the stop button, tracks that won't go out of record
when recording has stopped.......

All this has lead to some VERY long late night sessions. I have
decided to keep using Cakewalk when I need to use SMPTE. It works
perfectly with the Dakota setup.

Peter, I know that it would help if I gave more info on these issues,
but I can't afford to spend time chasing down incompatibility
problems. The studio schedule in the next few months is: 1) record 2)
sleep. Any time I spend away from 1) takes away from 2). Ask my wife.

The bottom line is...Cakewalk works with SMPTE in my setup and Vegas
doesn't. I've got all the latest versions and the latest drivers. I
have installed and re-installed. This isn't the first audio related
app/soundcard combo that I have installed, so I think I have a handle
on the basic problems. I am NOT going to start removing other cards
and re-installing Windows etc etc etc...

Since the SMPTE was added late in the Vegas beta, it seems logical
that there are bugs. I expect that others have found them and that
your programmers know about them. I also expect that you guys will
fix them and that Vegas will be a great product soon.

But, if you really, really, REALLY haven't heard of anybody that has
had SMPTE problems, I will take some time to document the blue
screens and page faults.

No need to chase them down. You are right, we are aware of the
problems with SMPTE/MTC with the 1.0 release. Look for an update that
solves all of this soon. (Real soon!)
