Repeating Audio Clicks

There is an annoying “click” about every 4 seconds in an audio tape that was converted to digital (the tape consists of an interview of an elderly person's life history done about 40 years ago). The tape is a little over 35 minutes long. Is there any way this repetitive click can be eliminated by using Sony Vegas Pro?

You could try the Click and Crackle remover in SF pro which includes Noise Reduction 2.0 suite, manually use the 'Replace' process or 'draw' the click out. Other NR software may work too, SCS's new 'SpectralLayers' or iZotope's RX or even Audition has a spectral tool. If you post a clip, we may better evaluate and recommend a procedure.

Is the clicking on the original recording, or did it occur during the transfer?

If it occurred during the transfer, and it is feasible, I would determine where the clicking is being introduced (is it the cassette deck, sound card, limitations of the computer) swap out the problematic item, and do a second transfer.

If this is not practical, relevant, I would take the file into Sound Forge and use the declicker there - just make sure to keep a copy of the original file should things get messed up.

And if you don't have Sound Forge, download a free trial.

Thanks for your attention and suggestions. I use an audio software programs called “Goldwave” and up to now has always removed “pops and cracks”; However, it did not work on this particular audio tape. The reason may be that the “pops” are so pronounced the software program thought it was part of the audio that should be kept. I tried Vegas Pro's filter and it too did not work. Instead of downloading other programs, I simply manually deleted the “pops”. Again, thanks for your help.
