Replace function doesn't

(Using DVDA Studio 5)

Several times I've used Replace to update an amended movie but, when previewed or burned, the original movie is still there, even though the Media info tab correctly lists the location and name of the new file.

In the end, I had to delete the movie and then import the latest version, which of course means formatting the button and its text again.

Has anyone else found this or has any advice?

Caveat: This applies for DVD-A Pro -- don't know about the Studio version.

If your replacement media is a longer or shorter version of the video file that it replaced, it's easy to be deceived into thinking that Replace doesn't work. I'm not saying that this is what happened to you, but check this scenario:

Let's say that your project contains Version A of your movie, and it's 37 minutes long. You make changes to the media file, and added material makes the new length 42 minutes. Now you use the Replace function in DVD-A and burn a DVD. When you play it, it looks like the original 37-minute video file is still there!

In DVD-A, select the Track Media as if you were going to replace it, and look down at the timeline. Make sure that the "clear" area between the yellow triangles covers the full length of the file in the timeline. I've observed that this is not automatically updated when you use Replace. If not, just drag the triangle on the right to the end and prepare your project for burning.

Also replacing media in the properties window doesn't change the media on the timeline. I find the most reliable way to replace media is to rename or delete the original file before opening the project. DVDA will then give an option to use a replacement file.

You still need to take cbrillow's point on board about the media length though.

Many thanks for your posts, guys.

I'm afraid I don't quite follow the reasoning here. If I Replace a file, surely the programme should recalibrate to fit automatically. For the most part, the amended versions in question have featured titles that lasted a few seconds longer than the original, so no great change. To test, I've just tried it with a completely different sized file - and the same happens, correct file name but no change in either timeline or preview. I'm at a lost to understand why include a Replace function if it doesn't work.

Yes, we have the same experience. Even after Replacing, despite the file location being updated, neither the timeline or the preview show the 'new' movie. Which begs the question, as above, of why have a Replace function if it doesn't work.

Well it does work to the extent that it replaces the media used on the menu page, e.g. in the buttons. If you do that you can then drag the new media onto the timeline when the old ones are displayed there.

Cheers

One would think that it 'should', but it doesn't, at least not in the sense that I've outlined above. I'm not the only one who has been caught by this.
