replace placeholder?

I'm sorry for this simple one

But how do I replace a "placeholder" on the time line with new media.

I drag a new media over it but it will not "get" placeholder duration.

How you do so?

I know about multicam editing features but it combines two or more tracks.

I'm interested in something like dragging one event on top of another and creating takes inside a new event.

Is it possible in VP or VMS timeline? I don't want to use explorer or project media tabs because it's too long...
