reprise - mxf vs mp4....

i know, i know, done to death, but i had a free morning and i have a massive project coming up with hours and hours of interviews and footage that i intend culling to an intermediary....

i've read EVERY post, almost everywhere regarding which is easier on the vegas timeline (not using gpu for rendering).

i'm not writing regarding smart rendering since i know mp4 is kaput in 13 and apparently likely NOT to be revised in order to do so. i also realise there's no recompression of audio with mxf.

to put all this in context i'm not looking for more than say 3 gen (starting out from hdv)- but i do want to retain all i can if possible.

so, i put a fairly simple talking head, a can of paint emptying on a canvas, and a horse galloping in a paddock. total one minute. i then playback at FULL res. and get full res from both mxf and mp4.

i then add default settings gaussian blur, tc, and soft contrast. (completely arbitrary choice)

i bring up task manger and run through both, after reboots between tests.

they BOTH use between 60 > 80% cpu, about 4gb ram and BOTH playback at around 12 > 15fps.

i'm getting a headache, i'm too old and tired. betasp i understood, 0's and 1's simply confuse me - what i've read seems to indicate mxf SHOULD display better performance. i'm not really seeing this?

someone please put me out of my misery and tell me which i should be using as an intermediary given the context above...

and to save clicks - i7 4770 / 12gb ram / gtx 650..

Since both Sony MXF 35Mbps and XDCAM EX MP4 35Mbps are the same video codec, at mpeg-2 35Mbps Long-GOP, and the same audio codec at PCM, I would expect the same playback/edit performance.

The only difference I would expect between the two is that MXF should still support smart rendering. As you stated, smart rendering in XDCAM EX MP4 has been disabled and may not return.
