resample+interlace-filter switches revisited

From prior discussion, do I correctly have the following impressions:

- The resample filter should be turned on for any item that has had its playback rate adjusted?

- Any event that is scaled in anyway should have the 'reduce interlace flicker' switch turned on. If so, should this be the case if the source material is interlaced, the final output is interlaced or both?

if you use slo-motion---sofo tech support advises you to use resample
but it doesn't hurt--can't hurt--to use resample and reduce interlace flicker to anything
it may take a little longer to render
but what the heck

actually now that i thought about it some more.. i have actually seen the interlace filter have negative effects..

i have seen it make things smeary or generally dull.. or lessen what i can only describe as an intensity to the motion of an interlaced display on NTSC..

I agree, I think I'd reserve "reduce interlace flicker" for only when I've seen the flicker, otherwise it can smooth/blur images that don't need it.

Resample should be ignored by Vegas when no frame rate change is done, so it's pretty safe to apply even when you're not sure.

Does this also apply to the switch then you render the entire project?

Yes, that's my understanding.

Wouldn't this be a good reason to make Resample checked by default? I'm about to get RSI from all these extra clicks. :-)

LOL!! ya no doubt!
....sigh... =)

Resample is not harmful in any way, but I believe it increases render time no matter what. Correct me if I am wrong SF.

>>>Resample is not harmful in any way

it depends on what you are trying to accomplish. I don't think it should be enabled by default. it can cause interpolation when you don't want it. sometimes slo-mo looks better without it. just depends...

I hear you on the RSI issue :D I hope there are a lot of improvements in VV4 in that area... there is too much buried in Options | Preferences | whatever... and under properties. being able to change options across multiple events would help with that!

There are cases (particularly when rendering to low frame-rate streaming video) where it would frame-blend things you wouldn't want frame blended, which is why it defaults to OFF. Also, it slows things down.

As far as RSI goes, you can apply the switch to multiple selected events, so if you right click on the first video event on a track, pick "select to end" then turn on the event resample switch, you'll get them all set.
