resolution change in render

my video project and file is 1440 by 1080 and i want to render a 1280 by 720 file as an mp4. i tried a few options, but keep getting black borders on the left and right. is there a way to eliminate the borders?

You could do two things:
1. Change your pixel aspect ratio in the video tab of your render options at render time.
2. If you only have a few clips you can right-click on each clip and select "Properties". Then uncheck "Maintain aspect ratio" in the Video Event tab.

1440x1080 with a pixel aspect ratio of 1.3333 exactly matches the frame aspect of 1280x720 with a pixel aspect ratio of 1.0000.

So, if you are getting large black bars around your 1440x1080 media when rendering to 1280x720, check to make sure that the Media Properties of your source media has the pixel aspect ratio is set to 1.3333.
