Resolution degrade

First, I want to say that I love Vegas Movie Studio and used it to mix some company videos that came out beautifully. I used to use Pinnacle before switching and love it.

Now, I've imported a 8mm personal movie from my Sony 8mm Digital to the hard drive via the USB port. Is there any differnce between transferring USB versus Firewire (speed, quality, etc.)?

The reason I ask is the quality of the import is grainy when I render it. It looks ok in the preview screen while editing. 720 DVD size looks horrible so I reduced it to the smaller size but it still looks bad in Media player. I rendered in mpg, avi, wmv and Quicktime. Quicktime looks the best because it opens in such a small window.

I just want to get the quality of the preview video and don't care at this point if it a small size.

Thanks for helping this newbie!

The USB transfer is usually a lower resolution MPEG format. Avoid at all costs*.

*The costs being $20 for a firewire card for your PC and $10 for a firewire cable.

I have a Sony 8mm TRV740. If you read the manual, the USB cable included is for transferring still images and connecting the camcorder as a webcam. The resolution is only 320X240. To get full DV quality, you need to purchase a firewire cable. Don't purchase the cheapest one you find. I've seen people have all kinds of connection problems with cheap firewire cables. Walmart sells a decent Belkin cable or purchase the Sony cable from their website.
