720 x 486 is the D1 NTSC standard resolution.

720 x 480 is the DV NTSC Standard resolution.

So what about that 576? And what is the maximum res for DVD's?

720x576 is PAL DV.

At this point in time, NTSC DVDs are 720x480 and PAL DVDs are 720x576. This will probably change soon.

Well, when the HD DVDs and their related ilk start becoming available, you're gonna want more than SD resolution.
