Resolving the error when trying to do a backup to a different folder

PeterH wrote on 9/29/2025, 9:24 AM

I've had this problem as long as I can remember and I have never been able to resolve it. I'd like to back up a project to a different folder on a different drive as well as copying all the media with the project. I'm currently using Vegas 19 but it's happened on many other versions too.

Whenever I try this I get the response "an error occurred while trying the save the file. The filename is invalid"

Has anyone managed to do this successfully?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Assuming that you mean 'all' media used or unused in the project, simply copy/paste in Windows Explorer window the project folders from the existing drive to the backup drive/s as well as copy/pasting the .veg file. Indeed. I make sure that I have at least 2 backups of all media - including on an off-line HDD.

I could do that but I'm only interested in the actual media used in the project. I'm using the "save as..." and then ticking the option to "copy all media used in the project." This is when I get the error message.

I regularly use this save option and I never had an issue! So I'm wondering why you get a filename invalid message. The only issue I know with this option is that you can only save once to a different folder, as soon as you start re-editing the project and add additional media you have to save to new different folder.

I've never been able to use this feature successfully. I always get this error. Can you go through the steps that you use when doing this?

Thanks.
