Reversing Only A Section Of Video

Using Vegas Video 2, does anyone know how to reverse only 15 or so frames of a video file? Tech Support said version 3 was needed, but I wanted to check with the pros first. Thank you.

This might not be possible but could one reverse only parts of the video frames? We are doing research on bird song production and want to reverse only the movement of the bird's beak. Could Vegas Video 2 or 3 perform that procedure?

You can do this with Vegas 2, but it won't be pretty ;)

Since it's only a few frames, you can Split at each frame, then drag the frames around to reverse the order. Zoom in close enough and this shouldn't be a problem. The sound will be rather strange though. If you want the sound reversed, you should copy that 15 frames worth to a .wav file, reverse it in Sound Forge, mute the sound in the video frames, and replace it with the reversed .wav file.

Thanks a million Chienworks. I guess we'd better upgrade to Vegas 3 since we plan to do this often, but that is a great idea.

BTW, do you have any input on reversing only part of the video frames as I described in the first post? It would be fantastic if that were possible.

Well, in version 3, you can split before and after that section, render this short section to a new track (not absolutely necessary, but it's a heck of a lot easier if you do!), replace the old section with the newly rendered piece, and set the velocity envelope to -100%. This still won't reverse the audio though. You'll have to use Sound Forge for that.

Rumor has it that Vegas 4 will have an audio reversing function. You might not want to wait that long.

To reverse a portion of the image (like the beak), you might try: reverse the shot and add it to an upper track, masking it to only show the beak in reverse. (Hopefully, the motion of thr rest of the bird's head will be still enough to allow a good-looking match.)

FWIW,

Windows Sound Recorder (Windows Accessories) will reverse audio... You can render the segment of audio to a new track, then open it in sound recorder and reverse it.

(While Forge is awesome, you don't need the bazooka to swat a fly.)

Good one MPH!
Personally, I think they should just merge Forge into Vegas ;-)

Thank you martyh, masking is the answer! I will purchase the upgrade to Vegas 3 tomorrow and get to work, thanks all.
