"Right Cick" to see additional takes?! GIVE ME A BREAK!

ZippyGaloo wrote on 9/10/2003, 2:16 PM
I've added multiple takes to the timeline, but Vegas doesn't give any indication (visually within the timline thumbnails) that there is another take available. This doesn't make sense at all. You mean I'm supposed to "Right Click" every clip to find out which ones have additional takes available? GIVE ME A BREAK!!

THIS FEATURE NEEDS TO BE ADDED!! I want to be able to tell immediately by looking at the timeline! Much llike I see the FX, Pan/Crop, and Generated Media.

Not to mention that when I "switch" takes the audio track doesn't change to the selected video!!

Show me that this event has more than one take...Feature request noted.

Take switching does work for multiselected events. Shift+g selects all events in a group, t cycles through takes.

Zippy has earned "ignore This User" status from a lot of people I bet. Classic example of some turkey TOO LAZY to read the manual preferring to rant and never once admitting he was wrong which he has been time after time.

I deleted my crass message to Zippy because I realized I had failed to heed my own advice given in an earlier post.

Having repented, I have chosen to Ignore This Loser, 'cuse me, User.

Zippy,

Perhaps you would be better off using some other video editing software (and taking your complaining to its forum.)

You have earned a well deserved "Ignore This User" status from me. Congratulations!

I always spot my material so I get the right take to start with.. Basically I ONLY use the best takes..
If for some reason a take doens't seem right in the edit, I might wanna try another one. But even then you can tell by looking at the material if it will fit.

It's not the tool, it's the brain that uses it..

Well, if you actually pay attention to what you are editing, and are a professional at what you do then you should be able to know what clips you have added multiple takes to. If I edit a video with 500 clips and I add takes to 5 of those clips I would have no problem finding exactly what clip had the multiple takes within a matter of seconds. Maybe you need to pay a little more attention to what you are doing instead of making pathetic attempts at trying to find flaws in a program. And if you really can't remeber what clips you added multiple takes to, try hitting the "M" key, that will add a nice little marker on your clip so you don't have to waste you valuable brain cells remembering such a simple thing.

Open the Edit Details window. It will show you how many takes there are and the current active take.

I've come to the conclusion ZG has "vanished" a whole bunch of us . . do you think this was intentional OR now knowing how difficult he [?] is finding to use and get on with V4, that inadvertedly closed down that which would be useful to him [?] ? Maybe I would be thinking, "I don't like what I'm hearing from these people. I'm going to ignore them - AH Ignore this user button - I can use this - let's see what happens". A bit like cutting off the branch you're sitting on - yeah? If this IS true, this is the first time I've come across this behaviour. I think I may write a paper and submit it to Nature. Are we observing a new type of web censoriousness that has not be seen before? - Any suggestions for the name of such behaviour?

Hahah! That's a good one busterkeaton!
BTW, didn't Grazie told once that Zippy is a Ca-Rep, brushing up on his person-oriented/service skills? If so, then he must have learned a lot. It makes one wonder why people bite the bait everytime he makes an infuriating post. I bet he's holding his belly now laughing his butt off! I think he knows the answers to his questions and is only fishing for reaction. The best way to get back on him is to ignore him completely. The question is, will he be ignored?

I just did an acting job for the Discovery Channel called "The JFK Conspiracies." I'm going to call the producer and suggest "The Zippy Conspiracies." Does this guy ever have a valid point? Or is he simply adding [empty] complaints here to match the valid beefs users have with other products? It's a conspiracy, I tell you....

I always thought he was a someone from Pinnacle who was disgruntled with the boat load of longtime users bailing over studio 8 not living up to par and if Studio 9 burps ther will be a flood. There has been a lot of mention of Vegas (good) on the Pinncale Studio forum.
PeterWright wrote on 9/10/2003, 11:32 PM
Worth a mention - within half an hour of your post, Zippy,
SF responded with "request noted".

How many other software developers would do this?

EPM,

We know that we can see takes in the edit details window. Maybe one of the several ways to approach this is for the edit details window to follow along. As in, it highlights whatever events are selected in the timeline. (Another nice and usefull thing for the edit details window would be some sort of Go To function. It would be nice to select a time code value and go to it.)

A second way to confirm the takes and other details would be in a status bar message. The status bar could list clip name, number of takes, whether the event is a member of a group and how many other objects are in a group, number of events selected... Of course some times the info is irrelevant so it shouldn't be shown. If more than one event is selected then clip names and number of takes isn't helpful. I suppose the message could just be "20 objects; multiple takes; members of 4 groups"

A third might be a tool tip when you roll over the event. Make the delay time adjustable.

The whole set could go into a prefs tab called "feedback options".

Corel Draw 7 had a pretty decent status bar. Very useful.

Rowan and Martin. You bet your sweet bippy!

Loved it as a child although mom wasn't too pleased that I watched it. Dad was very enthused about mini skirts. Not a great year for mom, now that I think of it.

I must have been 7?

Not that I want to defend mr Zippy but I suppose if you had been working on a doc for a year or so and it was an hour long or more then you might forget where the takes were. In Vegas you'd look at the Edit Details window. Duh!

I think that capturing the friedmans took about two and a half years. You could forget a lot in that time.

If you'd been working with Vegas for a year or more you would have figured out a lot more than Zippy.

Don't hate me: Though I kind of loath his methods and most of his ideas, in this case, Zippy had a point that I found valid, and am thankful that SOFO replied to it. I've not had multiple takes on video that often (twice, I think), but I do have multiple takes on audio on occasion. When I need to match a sound, or have changed a level here or there, I end up with 3 or 4 takes on an audio event. I must agree that it would be nice to have a readily available visual clue what and where those takes are (ghosting?). But the suggestions here are workable (marksers, etc). But if I need to think and work less, I can put more time into creativity. -mjr
