Rip DVD for editing on VV?

I'm a video newbie so please be easy on me. I just downloaded the VV demo and will be purchasing a license soon. I am working on building my A/V supercomputer for VV.

I need your help. I had some video shot using nice 3 chipper DV cameras. I own the footage, so copyright is not an issue. A friend captured the DV footage onto a Mac and burned it to a DVD.

What I would like to do is import the footage onto my laptop. And yes, the laptop has a DVD drive. I do understand that DVD's use a format which is not easily transferrable. How do you suggest ripping the DVD info onto my laptop hard drive? Into what format for editing? Will my process severely sacrifice video quality?

Thoughts?

Thanks!
Troy

PS: Yes, I searched the forum archives, but didn't find anything that addressed my needs.
