ripping

I am thinking of installing DVDfab HD to rip some DVDs to my HDD for ease of use when traveling. Is this program compatable with the Sony products I use, in the way that it won,t screw up my SVMS10 or DVDA5 products. I am new to ripping DVDs obviously and do not know, also I believe it is ok to rip for my own use for backup and to protect my original disk, please let me know if this is not the case.

Are there any other better free rippers that you would recommend?

Thank you for your help.

This forum is not the place to discuss third-party ripping software, in my honest opinion.
Such software is available, and beyond that, I have no comment.

Many professionals here make all or a portion of their income by producing copyrighted content.
Giving you advice on ripping that content may represent a conflict of interest for those professionals.

Best of luck to you.

My understanding was that it was fine to rip your own purchased DVDs as long as it was for your own use. Sharing the ripped file would therefore be illegal. I'm happy to be corrected.
Btw, I use DVDFab and it's a great piece of software. It rips to many different formats, most of which can be read by Vegas (not that I use it for that).

Within certain constraints, you are correct.
The COI issues with the professional content producers on this forum still exist, and many kinds of proprietary content (i.e., training materials) cannot be copied and distributed or sold..

Items 9 and 10 in the forum TOS explain my choice to exercise discretion. Hope that explains my cautionary note.

Other than occasionally mentioning that ripping software is available (and I have), I choose not to discuss it in detail here.

There are plenty of places on the internet to do that . . .

Thanks Andy, Musicvid -

Thanks for the input, I certainly understand your caution, I have no reason or intension to do anything illegal. I am just looking at protecting my investments that I have purchased, and have a little conveinence with my assets for myself. The reason I asked in this forum was to see if anyone has had DVDFab change or cause problems how the Sony products function on thier own, not together.

And to confirm that I can in fact rip something that I own. Sorry to bring it up in this forum.

Thanks for clarifying your question.

I am quite certain that DVDFab does not share any libs or .dll's with Vegas, nor does it overwrite anything that is already on your system. Best of luck.

My whole point (and the point of the TOS, I think) is about respect for the professionals who visit these forums and for their interests; and not specifically about the law. These are the same professionals who give us the best advice available anywhere for free.

That being said, if anyone is interested in what rights one does and does not have under the recently revised US copyright statute, the whole Rule is here:
