Ripple Edit

I have just started using VV LE which I received with the Dig Video & Audio Handbook from sonicfoundry. When I cut or delete an event with ripple edit in the active mode, later events in the timeline affected by the cut/delete do not slide to the left to fill void. Does this feature not work in the LE? Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to upgrade to the Professional version?

Your not doing anything wrong, and ripple edit works the same in LE & Full. This is just how it behaves.
To delete the space left over after the trim/cut/delete...double click on the empty space, and right click/delete(or Ctrl+X...or Shift+Delete keys).
If you wanted to drag the adjacent clip over to the left, to do a cross fade(dissolve)for example, AND have all the clips further down the timeline follow, then you can right click on the 1st clip after the empty space and click "Select events to end". Then you can drag ALL the clips to the right over to the left. This can be done accross multiple tracks, by holding Shift key while selecting, but best to practice this. Zoom out to observe what's being moved....making sure you don't move something on another track you don't want moved.

If you use that Selection Area/Loop Region bar tool, and create a selection area over the length to be be trimmed, then do your Cut or Delete(with Ripple enabled), it won't leave the empty space.

As you've seen, ripple edit is a bit inconsistent. To make a cut or delete ripple, you have to also do a timeline selection above the tracks to make the events to the right move left and fill the void. If you Paste the clip on the timeline, the events to the right will move right without needing a timeline selection so be careful.

I always keep ripple edit off. I got burned on a project once when I needed to add a title in the middle of the timeline and so I cut and pasted one that had the same look and just edited the text. I then did a 12 hour render to AVI not realizing that all the titles to the right of the paste had shifted! Had I inserted Text Media instead of the copy and paste, the ripple wouldn't have happened. As I said, be very careful with ripple edit because it's inconsistent in its implementation on what inserts cause the ripple and what don't and, IMHO, should be fixed.
