I want to extend a clip by pressing Control so that the clip is longer and slower. I also want all subsequent clips (events) to move down the timeline to maintain their relative position but, with ripple effect on, all that happens is the event I'm extending just overlaps the next with a crossfade.
Split the event where you what to adjust the time. Right click on the first event to the right and pick 'select events to end' from the menu. Simply drag as far out of the way you want to the right. All the events from that point to end of what's on the timeline will move as-is. Now go back to the event you want to adjust the time on and while holding down the Ctrl key move it right to slow it down, left to speed it up. Once you're happy with the result, again right click on the events to the right, then drag them back to butt up agains the new event end. Much simple in the doing, then the explaining.
Thanks and, actually, this is the way I have been doing it since I couldn't get the ripple effect to work the way I expected it to (which is probably not correct anyway). In response to GG's later reply I did read the manual and have done the tutorial but seemed to have a few mental blocks and appreciate all the advice given.
It's good to know that I have been doing it right all the time without really knowing that;-)
BillyBoy is correct if you only have one video/audio track. In the event you have many video/audio tracks this method will not work on all tracks unless you -
A: select the first clip on each track (then BillyBoy's suggestion)
or
B: Use your select tool and drag from the right hand end of the timeline, on all active tracks, back to your insert point. Then while the events are still highlighted you can safely drag.
Geez... so much fuss. I will watch with great anticipation as GG from this day forth only makes references to specific page numbers in the manual so everyone 'can help themselves, thereby learning' and thus greatly reducing the reading time in this fourm.
Don't take it the wrong way GG, just my sense of humor kicking in. <wide grin>
Hint to GG: Some people HATE reading manuals and much prefer the chumminess of forums like this. Unlike school, I don't think we're going to get graded on what we learn or don't learn, at least I hope not.
I have fun posting here. My posts are generally light-hearted. I'm only trying to help. I see nothing wrong with trying to inject a little humor here and there. For sure, sometimes I go on a little long. Just my writing style. I beg forgivness.
Am I reading between the lines that you just maybe are a little upset thinking I'm taking credit for "your" method or something silly like that? I see people repeating what I've said and what others said all the time. So what? Big deal. After all much of the information we all share in the forum is just a rehash of the manual, what's in the knowledgebase, what someone else said previously.
Now if you really want to nitpick, what I wrote IS different than what you said. I see no reason to make a "hole" (your words) or delete empty space or even try to decide up front how much "time" to add as a first step. All unecessary. I just, break, drag, extend, then drag back. Its OK if you or anyone else uses MY (snicker)method. (loud laughter) no wink.
