Royalty Free Music

mark003 wrote on 8/29/2008, 6:01 AM
I've been buying individual songs for clients based on their projects for years. I really need a collection but don't know where to look because there are so many options. Do any of you have good experience with a particular company? I do mostly corporate work.

Thanks in advance.
Oh yeah, I'd like to find something without a mortage.....if possible.

Rather than investing in a library, check out Freeplay Music.
A friend of mine who runs a local production company has been using them for a number of years and says that their rates, which are tailored to meet your specific needs (i.e. local, national, radio, TV, etc.) are very reasonable.
They have a wide range of styles to choose from.

I've been using Sonicfire Pro from SmartSound with good results recently. Sony also have Cinescore but the library is unfortunately somewhat limited.

The beauty of Sonicfire is the ability to score the music to the length you need and then change the arrangement internally to suit the mood and needs of your work such as minimising the instrumentation, not just the volume, behind voice over.
This is done using their 'multilayered' music libaraies and is quite simple to achieve with great results.
Their library is reasonably extensive and individual tracks can be auditioned online from within the program prior to purchase and download. They also sell DVD disks of their music library collections.

I think most of the royalty free buyout libraries sound pretty bad. Some good tracks but you get what you pay for in that type of music.

It never hurts to have some cheap, reusable tracks on hand though either. Digital Juice from time to time offers free downloads of some pretty decent sounding stuff. Not sure I would buy the libraries but again, having stuff on hand for down and dirty jobs without a music budget is good.

Non-Stop Music
Freeplay Music
Downright Music
Megatrax
Omni Music

I've worked extensively with each of these and they all offer a great selection and very high quality music for the price. It's not buyout, it's project specific but IMO you can't beat their quality.

Search these forums, question has been asked lots of times and there's good info in the answers.

I've used stock20.com quite often.

Excellent suggestions. I'll check them all out. I just looked at Freeplay and it seems perfect.

Thanks!!!

I've found much of the StaxTrax by Digital Juice to really good. And many of them I purchased were really cheap when on special (some as low at 9.99 per DVD). Plus you get an average of six tracks per song so you can customize the sound.

I'm throwing in my support of Sonicfire Pro by SmartSound.com ... from time to time, they offer a couple of their libraries as a package deal and provide the program for free ... The last two I purchased came bundled with their latest software - which also entitles me to the next upgrade (5.0) for free.
As newhope indicated, they produce their own series ...
they also provide free online tutorials on how to use their software. . .
Sonicfire Pro is the only package I've ever had - and it appears that it is the only package I'll ever need. . . my disclaimer is that I use it primarily for background music during slideshows, documentaries, and family projects for work, so I may not have the wide variety demand that others may have for their music requirements.
Their last version introduced mood mapping to the mix - I imagine the tempo and tone of the music can change as the film demands. . . not familiar with it, but sounds intriguing.
The music is fantastic in quality, the flexibility for duration and intensity is unbeatable, and the ability to vary each selection by changing the sequence of each instrument loop (either automatically through the program or creatively oneself) makes it a musical tool of infinite variety.

I am thoroughly satisfied with the product since I was originally introduced to it back in 2001. . . I have no desire or need to hunt for another music package - Sonicfire Pro fills all my requirements.

Just my two cents - until that time. . . Earl J.

SmartSound has some of the best. Many of the musicians they used did music for feature films, etc. I also like lots of the DJ StackTraxx. Their new WorshipStaxx w/ Vocals will be released soon. That will be incredible.

Be wary of FreePlay. They have some good music and it is free for home use. However, it is pretty expensive for just one song. Not only that but you have to pay for it every time you use it in a new project. I've found the combination of SmartSound and StackTraxx to be more than adequate to meet my needs as well as those of many others I know.

I'm not too keen on buying libraries. It seems to inevitably happen that I can't find exactly what I want, go online, and buy something there instead.

I'm currently using Revo

I bought a library from studio cuts about 90 discs

And they gave me a good deal they were the only ones who were prepared to do it this way every one else one song at a time
How unrealistic is that
we only have a few minutes to produce content buy the time you downloaded the music clip you are on to the next piece of content anyway

the down side is you have to choose wisely

I have also used and really like VASST TrakPak.. It is modular like Sonicfire Pro and has a variety of beginnings, endings, and seamlessly looping middle sections. It is very easy to use inside Vegas.

I really like Cinescore as well. Their selections have been growing too. If you want good quality cinematic music, "The Big Picture" produces amazing results.

Anyone ever tried this new Albatat Muse? Sounds interesting...but not for PC yet.
