in the vegas "tips, tricks, and scripts" newsletter, is says to set the ruler time format to "SMPTE Drop (29.97 fps, video)" but it doesn't say why to use this setting. are there advantanges to using this setting over just "time" or other settings? time just seems the "most natural" to me.
Naturally, that is for NTSC. However, that uses the "timecode" notation for times. You get the standard Hour:Minutes:Seconds:Frames (which is how the timecode is recorded on the tape) and makes it easy to edit down to the frame level. However, any of the ruler settings should work. Use the setting that suits you best. This one suits me best.
I have mine set to time and frames. Just set it to whatever you feel comfortable with, don't listen to other people that tell you what you are "supposed" to have it set to.

It may not matter what you set it too, but if set incorrectly, it may report the length of the program incorrectly. Drop Frame 29.97 is the most accurate time reporting for NTSC.
