Safe Area Displays on External Monitor for VV3,0c

I use a Sony PVM 1353MD for my external monitor because it is unusually sharp and clear compared to a computer monitor. I would like to be able to show the Safe Area boxes ON that monitor.

Does anyone know how?

If not, SF, please make it so that I can show the safe areas and other things on the external monitor.

The safe areas are there to show you what you will be able to see on an external monitor, so, effectively, the edges of the bezel around the screen are the safe area lines. Make sure you set that monitor for normal viewing mode. If you set it for underscan then you will see the entire picture on the screen (similar to the preview window in Vegas). In normal mode it should show you what you would see on a normal television (which is what the safe area is all about).

You might try dropping a safe-area graphic on a top track, and mute when not needed... (activate the alpha)

(right-click on the image to "save-as")

This image was based on the defaults in Vegas.

Update:

Should be better now.

Chienworks,

I appreciate your comments, but I understand that. I realize that the bezel serves essentially the purpose as the safe area. But, I WANT to work with underscan, so I can see what is lost. I want to avoid having to manually switch back and forth between normal screen and underscan. There are times when I want to recover some of that material outside the safe area by resizing the image, shrink it, giving a small black area around the computer version which can be judged by the computer's safe area box. It doesn't show on the external monitor, so I have to guess or manually switch back and forth between the computer's tiny screen and the external monitor's better screen.

Further, I would like to see the grids on the external monitor so that I can level or straighten some scenes more accurately on the larger screen. Yes, I could manually resize the computer's version to be big, but after a while this gets to be a hastle. I would even like to be able to see both the safe area and the grids at the same time, on occasion. That would be really nice.

Thank you.

Thanks for the graphic. It is a workable solution, even if not as ideal as having VV put the graphic there in the first place.

It may be worth keeping in mind that the use of a generated graphic is specifically to avoid variations in monitor production and monitor stability.

Unless you have just aligned your monitor's deflection coils & amps in your studio, at temperature, etc., variation in image position may have crept in due to handling, component age, temperature, mal-alignment, etc.

Like stations and larger facilities, small studios and independents might consider testing the production monitor monthly, for alignment and shading. It is after all, the device on which you base the look of everthing you do.

And of course, checking the setup (brightness, phase) before each session is standard practice, to avoid drift.
