Sample videos upload site - MIME types fixed

Chienworks wrote on 4/7/2002, 8:00 AM
Hey folks! I finally got the MIME-types corrected on my server so that .wmv files work now. Thanks for your patience and also especially thanks to those who have submitted their video clips! I've certainly enjoyed seeing what others are doing with Video Factory.

Hammer45 - I don't think you finished your upload. I got about 19.5MB of it, but it only plays about halfway through, and the upload logs don't show that the upload completed. What size is your file? I am trying to keep these around 20MB or less.

StewartR - Would you please upload your cruise video again? I had an error in the upload script last night and unfortunately the file got scrambled. Sorry! :(

Chienworks,
File has been re-uploaded. Thanks again for providing this service. By the way, I've just finished viewing Hammer45's video. You're right, it stops in the middle. The quality is very good and I'd be interested in knowing the methods of capture, edit, and production. Also, you can delete my first upload (Baby Avery video in .rm format) as I can't get it to play. Looking forward to seeing others work and techniques.
Thanks again,
Randy

It looks like Hammer encoded his video at 850Kbps, which is pretty high for the web. Probably 256Kbps would be sufficient and the file would be less than 1/3 the size.

StewartR, i could play your .rm version just fine. I've got RealOne player installed at home, and RealPlayer 8 at the church. Both players had no trouble with it.
randy-stewart wrote on 4/7/2002, 2:31 PM
Hmmm...I've got Real Player One here too but just the free version. Maybe I need to upgrade or download again. I keep getting an unspecified error. Oh well, as long as it plays for everyone else. If you run into storage size problems, you'll know which one to delete since I have the 256K .wmv version uploaded also. This site is really cool. I'll be doing more soon using VF exclusively. As I was capturing old VHS tapes, I ran across our time in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Think that will be my next project for a show. However, will be on a business trip for a week. Will check in upon return.
Thanks again,
Randy

Thanks for fixing this. I like being able to see everyone's work.

My favorite so far is Jimcho's Kungfu movie. Very nice.

kaacee: Sorry about this, i should have specified ... my upload script rejects files that aren't .mov .rm .ram .mpg .mpeg .wmv. It completely ignores .zip files. There really isn't much savings when compressing video files, and i would just have to download it over my 56K modem, unzip it, then upload it back to the server again.

Please submit your file again, but in uncompressed .wmv. Thanks!

ah, ok, will do :)

Chienworks...

I like the improvements you have made to your website and it is getting popular. I really like seeing other peoples work.

Have you thought of posting the web site on the Vegas forum and do you have a video of some of your best work?

Chienworks wrote on 4/10/2002, 2:28 PM
Well, i don't want it to become too popular ... i've only got an 896K line for my server. But that is a good suggestion. Lots of our old VideoFactory friends (myself included) have switched to using Vegas now.

My best work? Hmmmmm. Actually my involvement in all this tends to be helping others get their projects done. I'm the one that everyone in town thinks of when they have a "techie project" and don't know how to go about it. The vast majority of what i use Sonic Foundry software for is editing other people's work for them. But i may have a personal experiment or two up my sleeve somewhere. Let me look through my files. :)

Just a quick note ...

Unless your video is very short, say under 30 seconds, please encode at 256Kbps or less. I realize this isn't particularly high quality, but it's good enough to let people see what you're doing, and low enough to stream for broadband users without tying up the server resources to much. Dial-up users will also be a lot happier with you. :)

It looks like the Vegas folks are starting to take over. Let's show them what we can do with Video Factory! It's the creativity that counts more than the tools!

Thanks again everyone!

Chienworks,

Just want to congratulate your site...it's really getting some good stuff on it. One of the guys, the police officer from Topeka (cool music sound on slide show) asked for some feedback but I haven't seen his e-mail address. Can you include that in the text files? Some of these videos are really creative and I'd like to ask the film makers how they've done the effects.

Thanks again for the resource! Happy editing.

Stewart, good idea, also a spot to enter the length of the video.

And for SF, I'd like to see an option to check for an e-mail address when you click on a persons log-in name. Web addresses show up, but not e-mails.

Randy & Jon, usually the eMail addresses are kept private because most people wouldn't want everyone to know what it is. If you want your eMail address shown publicly, list it in the comment section.

I am working on a rating & feedback section to the site. It should be available in a few days.

Chienworks,
Good point. Looking forward to the feedback section. Before you know it, your site will be/do everything any of the commercial sites do. Again, really appreciate you efforts.

The viewer comments section is now functional. (I hope, anyway.)         ;)
Look under "Notes"
