Just got a sanyo fh1 which records 1920x1080 60p to sd card mp4 files. The files crash vegas when I try to click them to the timeline. Anyone else have this problem ?
I was using a Sanyo HD 1000 with the same file types and it was really a problem to get decent playback until I set up the properties to match the video file (with is Lower Field First), then dropped them in the timeline. It wasn't crashing the program though so it might be a different issue.
This still may be tied to the memory handling issues that are all over these boards. Things to try- reducing your preview RAM, rendering threads to 2 or 1, setting up big Windows swap files - all seem to have some impact on stability.
Also, did you install the Sanyo movie software (DVD Movie Factory)? Migtht uninstall it then re-install Vegas and see if that fixes it.

Usually when you get a crash when placing media on the time line, either the media has a problem or Vegas is missing the appropriate codec for the media in question.
I recently purchased a Sanyo HD2000 and in the beginning I had some weird crashes dragging the MP4 files into the timeline as well...
But all I had to do was restart Vegas and the problem went away.
Vegas definately has some wierd issues with how it handles codecs. I recently had it stop accepting Motion JPG AVI files (worked great before)!. I tried many things to solve this including uninstallind ffdshow, but Vegas still couldn't understand the video stream. In desperation, I reinstalled Vegas, and voila, Motion JPG AVI files could now be understood.
Personally, Vista (and all previous OSs on the PC) handle codecs in a terrible way. It's always a complete mess and rarely does one know which codec is being used to decode a video file.
One example of inconsistency: One can get beautiful playback of MP4 (H.264) files from my Sanyo camera at 1920x1080 60fps progressive with the Core AVC codec installed, but these same files chug within Vegas. Is Vegas decoding these MP4s with a different codec? How do I control that?
Another example: Outputting a Cineform AVI with Virtualdub creates an unplayable AVI in Windows Media Player, but the same clip encoded to Cineform within Vegas produces an AVI file that plays beautifully in WMP. Why?
Another example: Vegas sometimes tries to use the internal cfhd.dll file to decode Cineform files instead of the one I've installed with NeoScene. One has to rename the Vegas internal dll so that it isn't used. This makes one think that Vegas has it's own set of decoders that it sometimes uses.... Who controls which ones?
If anyone can explain those mysteries, maybe my opinion of the codecs in Vista and Vegas will be improved.
Also, why isn't there a codec configuration option page within Vegas? Better yet, why isn't there one built into Vista???
When I render to a Cineform AVI, the video looks just as good as the original. I've also rendered to a high quality MJPG (6000k) and the video quality is 'nearly' identical.
I think the basic free Cineform codec that comes with Vegas can only do 1440x1080, and I know for a fact that it is crippled so that it can't be used to encode outside of Vegas (I thought it inserted a watermark or something).
I think you need to pay for the full version of Cineform (Neo now?) to go full size HD and use with other programs such as VirtualDub.
