Saving as MPEG, not playable on other computers

robinsnest wrote on 12/22/2000, 3:33 PM
Greetings!

Can anyone tell me what we need to do to save files as MPEG's and be able to play them on other
computers? We have tried various computers and none can play files made with Video Factory that
have been saved as MPEG's. The only computer they will play on is the one they are made on.

Thanks!

Robin

What happens when you try to play them on the other
computers?

The message is something to the effect of unable to locate cadec file and it wants to download
something off the web. Same effect on 3 different computers.

Another problem, we loaded all the files (pictures/audio) and .vf file onto another computer. When we
play the wave through windows media, it sounds just fine. When we play the .vf file through Video
Factory, it sounds real choppy.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

When you create a MPG in a video editor and render it, it
uses a CODEC to compress the file. That's one reason a MPG
file is a fraction the size of a AVI file. In order to play
it, the file needs to be uncompressed. If the CODEC you
used to compress the file isn't on the computer, then it
won't play.

That's why it plays fine on the computer you created it on
and may not on other computers. The solution is to install
the same CODEC on the other computer.

Of course if you're planning on distributing the files to a
wide audience, or just a few friends, then that can become
a real problem.

I personally haven't got very far with Video Factory
because of numerous bugs so I haven't checked if the plug-
in to create MPG's uses a standard CODEC or not. Assuming
you're using Windows as your OS and you've installed their
FREE Media Player you can go to Microsoft's site (click on
help while in Media Player) version 6 or later at it should
update your CODEC collection automatically. If you haven't
installed Media Player that too is a free download.

Give this a try, render the files as MPEG-1. This can be
achieved by using either of the VideoCD built-in templates
or by creating your own custom template (setting is on the
MPEG page). If that works and it meets your quality needs
then that is a possible solution.
