Saving hard drive space

I want to know how to save hard drive space when I render my HD footage. I have a Sony HDR HC1 that records in 1080i.

When I want to render, say a 5 minute video in 1080i as an avi file, it runs up to 40 GB OF INFO.

That is a lot! I need to know how to keep something resembling the same quality, but keeping the file size SMALLER.

You should not be rendering as uncompressed. If you want to render in an intermediate format you choose Cineform AVI (there is an "options" button under AVI, and then you select that codec), if you want HDV you export as HDV, and if you want a delivery format, you export as WMV. But uncompressed is not what you usually want.
