Saving metadata in WMV 9 -- confused

vitamin_D wrote on 10/19/2003, 5:26 PM
I've got a 30 second clip with meta-data commands set down at 10 second intervals -- none of them make an appearance in my WM player at the lower-left text field, nor can the commands be seen by selecting Properties from the right-click menu in WMP. All commands have their associated comments in the Parameter field; though I've just now tried placingthe commands in the Comments fields, as well -- no luck.

I'm trying to insert Title, Author and Copyright commands, BTW.

Any idea as to what my solution could be?

Thanks,

- jim

Most likely you're dealing with configuration issues in the Windows Media Player.

In Windows Media Player 9, you'll need to enable title, etc. in the View | Now Playing Options choices. To view captions that were entered as commands ("Text"), you'll need to enable Play | Captions and Subtitles.

BTW, if you are inserting command markers for URL flips ("URL"), you'll need to check the "Run script commands when present" checkbox in Tools | Options | Security tab. This is not enabled by default.

I still must be missing something, and I'm guessing it's at the Vegas/render end of things.

All of the options in the View | Now Playing Options menu are checked :/ Still, nothing shows beyond my playback rate and the title of the file (not theTitle embedded in the media).

"On If Available" in the Play | Captions and Subtitles menu is also selected.

In the Vegas project I've rendered this file from, I've also looked to be certain that "Save project markers in media file" is selected -- it is.

Thanks for your help so far,

- jim

Set the title, author, and copyright in the summary tab of your project properties. Or you can create a custom WMV template and set it in the Index/Summary tab. You should now see this information in WMP9 for the rendered file.

Please note that if there is text set for the same item (such as Author) in both places, the summary data settings for project properties will always override what you have set in the template.

Some notes:

I created a Vegas 4 project with command markers for author, title, and copyright, and also summary data for them (via project properties or custom template). I made them unique strings so I could tell where each was coming from. After rendering to WMV, when I played the file, I noticed that WMP uses the summary data for displaying them (not the command markers).

When I loaded my WMV file into the Windows Media File Editor (utility that comes with the Windows Media Encoder), the script stream contains my command markers for author, etc. so these command markers are indeed getting written to the file. Apparently WMP9 ignores them (except for URLs). I believe some older versions of WMP did use the script stream for displaying this information.

yet another reason I'm glad to be a Vegas user...

I just looked at my rendered WMV file in WMP7. It also uses the summary data for displaying the title, author, and copyright, so it behaves just like WMP9.
