Saving MPEG2 format question

Hello. I'm trying to save a file as MPEG2 for a friend. I'm noticing, however, that the MPEG2 file I create using both the Default and DVD options will not play on Windows Media Player 9. It can be imported into Vegas (I'm using 4.0c) successfully and played there. Why won't it play on WMP9, and how can I get it to?

I appreciate the help!

It might be possible that you don't have an MPEG2 CoDec on your system. Yes, you said Vegas could play it but that doesnt' necesarily mean it's a system wide registered CoDec.

Do you have any kind of software DVD player on your system? I believe the MPEG2 format requires that royalties be paid to whoever (the creators I guess) whenever a decoder is distributed. That's why Microsoft doesn't just automaticly include a decoder with Windows. I guess they don't have the money.

Try MPEG-1 instead. That should play back in just about any player out there. If you use a bitrate of at least 4Mbps then result should be nearly indistinguishable from MPEG-2.
