Saving projects to DVD

I'm trying to find the best way to backup project files (not to the hard drive) while the projects are in process. I have an HP100i which writes in the DVD+RW format. It works fine for writing MPEG2 (to VOB) files, but can it also serve as storage for other file formats? I've tried "save as" on the project, with media, to the drive, but can't get that to work. Also tried it to a CD-R disk, but the file is too big. Any ideas?

Does the burning software that came with the drive have a "Data disc" mode? Most CD burning software has modes for creating Audio, Data, and Video discs. Perhaps you can do the same thing with a DVD.

You can not save it to the DVD from VV. YOu have to save it to your hard disc in a location and then archive it to a DVD ROM from a program like Nero.

Thanks to both. I had saved the files on my other hard drive, then did as Chienworks suggested. There is a Record Now program for the drive and there is a "make data disk" option in it. Worked great. I'll be able to sleep a little better now, not to mention the ability to clean up the hard drive.
