Scan Doubler question

Does anyone happen to know if those thousand dollar scan doublers used for upscanning to HDTV or for projecting on a large arena video projector, are any different than what you would get from captureing video in Vegas Video and then simply resizing it to the HDTV resolutions? Would I get better quality by using the hardware method or the software method?

Thanks for any knowledge you guys might be able to provide.
