Scenalizer-Live: What, Why, How to? Help and Suggestions, please.

I have been looking at ScenalizerLive, and it seems a facinating utility for use with VV3.0c. However, I can't get over the feeling that I am using it all wrong. It LOOKs like I should be getting more benefit from it than I am.

Please, all you smarter more experienced types, Why? What? How to?

How to you set it up?
Do you make a separate directory for each tape?
Do you name the directory something special?
Do you name the CAPTURE something special?
Why do you find this useful?
Do you use reverse serial dating for the names (20021117 for 2000 Nov 17)?
What other settings do you make that are especially useful in VV?

Any special suggestions?

My tape library is beginning to get big, and I don't want to do this all wrong, nor miss out on something simple that I am just not seeing that would be immensley useful.

I'd appreciate a LOT of really basic discussion on this. Thanks!

And, if SoFo knows of anything that I should do to prepare for upcoming version so my favorite program, I'd appreciate comments from them, too. Further, if nothing special, that would be nice to know, also.

1. You set it up according to what you you are using--for VV without a card like a Canopus it should read Microsoft DV Camera and VCR. The options under File/Options are fairly self explanatory.

2. There are several ways to set up the directory---At the tops of the window it says Harddisk--just click on add and add a new folder for capture on the drive you want to capture on---You could always create the folder before going into Scenealyzer then click the explore button and chose it as your capture folder.
3. Each person has his own system for capturing---I usually call my folders Roll 1,2, 3 etc. You can name them anything you want.
4.Its useful because it keeps things organized.
5. Thats a matter of preference--
6. You can set up Scenalyzer in Vegas as your default capture utility---Just go into Vegas, Options/Preferences/Video and Browse for Scenalyzer as your capture utlity---this way you never have to leave Vegas.

7. Experiment---check out optical capture because on some projects it makes sense.

HOpe this helped.

I am not in front of my computer so my answers are coming from memory.

How to you set it up? JUST BE SURE DEVICES (cams, vcr) ARE HOOKED UP AND TURNED ON. SCLIVE WILL RECOGNIZE THEM.
Do you make a separate directory for each tape? PERSONAL CHOICE. I PUT ALL MY VIDEOS ON THE ROOT DIRECTORY OF MY VIDEO DRIVE.
Do you name the directory something special? PERSONAL CHOICE AGAIN. YOU CAN CREATE WHATEVER DIRECTORIES YOU CHOOSE AND THEN PLACE A CAPTURE NAME IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER OF THE SCLIVE SCREEN.
Do you name the CAPTURE something special? SEE ABOVE ANSWER. I USUALLY NAME THE CAPTURE BY WHAT THE MAIN CONTENT OF THE TAPE.
Why do you find this useful? WHAT IS 'THIS'? IF YOU MEAN SCLIVE ITSELF, I DO NOT USE ANY OTHER PROGRAM FOR CAPTURE....PERIOD! (AND I HAVE SEVERAL CHOICES)
Do you use reverse serial dating for the names (20021117 for 2000 Nov 17)? NAMES OF WHAT... THE CAPTURES? YOU CAN USE WHATEVER YOU WISH.
What other settings do you make that are especially useful in VV? NOT SURE HOW THIS RELATES TO SCLIVE. PLEASE CLARIFY

I use SCLive strictly for capturing 4 audio track tapes - since Vegas cannot do that. For all other tapes, I just use Vegas' built in capture where I can manually enter my batch entry positions. SCLive is a nice, simple, capture program that can now capture all 4 audio tracks in ONE pass over firewire. If Vegas would add this one feature, I could use their capture program exclusively.

As for setup, that depends on your personal preferences. But, it is a VERY good program for capturing (I even use it to capture some live-mix situations that are later edited down in Vegas). Nice one-button start and stop interface so the person mixing doesn't have to know much to get it started.

I use Scenalizer because of its excellent scene-detection. Batch capture and tape scans are also nice. (I think the scene detection in the Vegas Capture utility only works with certain cameras -?)
