Scene detection mystery?

I'm mystified by this. We recently shot an event on 83 minute tapes. Started at the beginning of the tape, shot 80 minutes non-stop, and changed tapes.

When I imported the tapes to Vegas I inadvertently left "Scene Detection" checked.

To my surprise, Vegas made 28 scenes out of the first 80 minute tape, twenty six out of the other, even though the cameras were in the "Record" mode for the entire shoot.

Any idea why this would happen? I though scene detection worked off interruptions in the time code.

Jack

P.S. When I unchecked "Scene Detect" and recaptured the tapes there were no breaks in the continuity.

Are you shooting DV or HDV? On HDV material, Vegas will detect the tiniest of dropouts or other stream anomolies and will insert a scene break. I've never noticed that behavior on DV material.

Funny. If I set up a new machine, install Vegas and forget to uncheck that dang little box, I get a hundred little clips the first time I try to capture from a DVCAM or Mini-DV tape. Every time the camera person stops "record," a new scene begins.

"Every time the camera person stops "record," a new scene begins."

That's exactly the way it supposed to work when scene detection is enabled.

I was shooting SD, John. VidCap did not indicate any dropped frames on either capture. Never been aware of this happening before, although it may have without my taking notice.
