"Scene Selection Menu" topic revisited

JJack wrote on 8/17/2003, 10:54 PM
jeffcrow, in a post dated 8/6/2003 1:35:40 PM, described -- among other items -- how to handle end actions so that a file made up of several shorter segments could be coded so that each segment could be selected from a Scene Selection Menu and played with a correct ending, rather than continuing on to the end of the file.

I'm seeking some clarification, since I haven't been able to make it work yet. At the moment I have chapter markers inserted at the beginning of each of my nine segments within the total file. Should I be using these? Or should they be replaced with an inpoint and outpoint yellow marker at the beginning and end of each segment? And I don't understand what the green start marker does in this setup. I. too, have a play all button on my main menu.

Chapter markers are used to break up a single video clip file into what appears to the user as separate selections, by defining multiple entry points into the same clip. Each button created by the "Insert scene selection menu" context menu item will be a link to a different start point in your file. You indicate to the routine that creates the scene selection menu where you would like these start points by using chapter markers in the original clip. You can later change this start point by double clicking on the button for the scene to bring up the timeline and sliding the Start marker to a new location. Changing the in point with "Set In Point" has a similiar effect in that the start point must be at or after the in point.

The simple explanation of the technique I described is to use the Set in and Set out point yellow markers to restrict the video that can be played by that button to what is between the in and out points, which can be set anywhere in the file.

Now a little less simple explanation:
When you click on the menu button for a scene, you will jump to where the start marker for that button was set (set to the chapter marker for that button by default). The player will then play the video from that point, stopping at the point defined by the Out point marker, at which time it will either return to the main menu or the scene selection menu depending on whether or not you have the "Enable go up buttons" item in the preferences set. Remember this must be selected to have it go back to the scene selection menu, otherwise it goes back to the main menu.

By default the Out point marker is set to the very end of the file, this is why it does not stop playing at the end of the current chapter, it is told to play all the way to the end of the last chapter by default. If you set the Out point to the end of the current chapter, then it will play the one chapter only and end.

Technically, the Out point marker is an End Action marker, if the "Enable go up button" item is set, DVDA will insert the Return to last menu end action at that point, if not set, it inserts the Stop end action at that point. There are many other end actions available in the DVD spec, like one to replay the chapter, one to jump to a new location, etc, but these two end actions, return and stop, are the only two DVDA allows you to set.

I hope this helps. You did not say in your post exactly how it is not working. If it is still not clear, tell me what you are experiencing and I might be able to be more specific. Lately I have only been to the boards once or twice a week, so I might not get back to you for a few days, but I will get back to you!

JJack:

Just read your post in the ac3 thread where you said you are tying to get a hold of me, if you have further questions, just post them here and I will try to get back to you here.

I just can't figure out what's going on. My software is totally unresponsive to any outpoints I insert. At the present time, to review, I have a single file rendered fron VV4 to DVD-A 1.03 in which I have 9 separate films. I have 9 chapter markers inserted. When I open the file all the default settings are there on the timeline. There are my chapter markers. At the beginning of the timeline, in addition to my first chapter marker is the green start flag and a yellow inpoint marker. At the end of the file is a yellow out point marker. Yesterday I grabbed the outpoint marker and slid it all the way to within 1 minute of the start of the file, and went to preview and played film 1 from my scene selection menu. One minute into the file came and went and the file continued to play past the marker.I'm wondering if my DVD=A software has some corruption in it, so I'm going to download it again from SoFo and see if that makes any difference.

During this time I have been working with a SoFo tech rep Nichloas Wiesmueller, who has read your posts and says he has applied your solution to one of his projects and it works fine. I'll be back later today with the results after I download a newDVD-A 1.0c

Jack, I wouldn't waste time redownloading the program...it sounds like it is doing exactly what it is suppose to do - and what you have told it to do.

I think you are not reading the instructions correctly and applying them accordingly.

You set your in/out points - but went to a scence select and played chapter one. Which part of this picture doesn't jib for you yet?

You have to create a separate menu has the "new" chapter settings you created.

Try walking through the steps from the beginning - and start fresh (don't assume anything) and see if it works for you.

In less than 3 minutes I just did it with one file that was two minutes long. Set in/out points for a 30 second playback and put chapter points in it.

The second one I did in/out points from the 30 second mark to about 1 minute (again added different chapters).

The third file from 1 min to about 1.5 min (and chapters).

Each button played it's own 30 second segment - and that's all it played. Each 30 second segment had it's own chapter - and that's all it played.

So...it works...without a doubt.

OK. I'll give it anotyher shot and be back later in the day. Have some other things to do first.

I've never doubted it works. I just can't get a handle on it. I'm not stupid. Among other skills I'm a professional trainer and have developed numerous successful training programs for highly sophisticated hardware/software systems. But I'm just not clicking on this.

OK. Let's start from the beginning. My file is sitting on the timeline, all 1 hr 45 minutes of it. It has 9 chapter markers. And a scene selection menu showing those chapter markers. Should I keep the chapter markers and the scene selection menu or get rid of them?

Jeff - I assume that's your first name - I want you to know how much I appreciate your help and your patience and your willingness to hang in there with me. I really need to know how to make this work. So, let's take it a step at a time.

Again, it would be most helpful if we could switch to direct e-mail. transformance@juno.com.

Hope anything I commented didn't come across like I was callin ya stupid. I just know what it's like sometimes not being able to wrap my brain around something until I

1) know it works - and

2) take a step backwards and approach it from the top.

Unfortunately - by the start of your second paragraph...we need to take another step backwards and totally start from scratch. Tell you what - when I'm done burning this DVD, I'll shoot you a step-by-step at your e-mail addy with screen shots to 'splain it.

I'll be sending it from my hotmail account (kjvpresents@hotmail.com).

Ciao

KameronJ, I think I could use what you emailed JJack, can you post a link or email to nolonemo@yahoo.com? I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

Hi JJack, sorry I was not able to use the computer over the weekend, so I am just now catching up on all this. Glad to see it is working for you now. Did you see what it was that kept it from working or did it just kind of start all of a sudden? I am curious as to what was going wrong, maybe others could learn from your experience.

Warning! Sarcasm set to stun: Why share it? everybody who has a problem should immediately take it off-line so that nobody else can benefit.

I thought that was the whole point of a forum - TO SHARE PROBLEMS AND THEIR SOLUTIONS!!!
