Screen Capture Cant see Source

ByronK wrote on 12/29/2019, 7:28 PM

Purchased VP17 for the screen capture feature but cant seem to get an image on the source in the capture window.

Also when I launch the capture feature my mouse intermittently hangs and I cant select anything. After the screen capture window is closed then the mouse is working OK.

I basically followed Gary's Youtube tutorial but my capture window doesn't have any images in it.

Thanks in advanced for any assistance!

It's hard to tell. it's working fine on my Radeon 7 system. Maybe try to update your GPU drivers?

Thanks fr0sty for the assistance. Updated my graphics drivers and screen capture is still the same as above and the mouse and system intermittently freezes but is back to normal after I close screen capture.

I specifically bought the upgrade to keep screen capture and editing within Vegas but it's NOT working. Anyone has any other ideas to assist?

Thanks! -bK

Screen capture has a problem with AMD cards. I always have a black preview on my 1-monitor system. With the new update there is a small white dot on it, probably the mouse pointer. I haven't tested the camera yet. The graphics driver is always the latest. If I look through the bug reports, it are always AMD users who have not solved this problem. Capturing with OBS works well.

Thanks matthias-krutz. Same here I'm only using one monitor, nothing fancy.

Removed the Elgato capture device and the mouse in Vegas doesn't freeze anymore but still CANNOT capture anything. Only a frozen cursor of the mouse on the capture display (preview) screen..

I also use OBS but the reason I PAID to upgraded was to keep screen cap and editing within Vegas.

On the Vegas support page it states the following:

Supported GPU: AMD/ATI

AMD/ATI® Radeon with 4 GB and VCE 3.0 or higher (Radeon Pro series with 8 GB for HDR and 32 bit projects)

I'm using an ATI Radeon 390 w/ 8GB and as fr0sty kindly mentioned, I updated my drivers and still unable to capture with the intermittent mouse freeze

I'm curious what Gary's setup is, which seems to be a secret, to get his screen capture to work so well. (;

Btw, All this time I have disabled GPU and just re-enabled GP and it doesn't matter if GPU is enabled or disabled. Still CANNOT capture.

matthias-krutz wrote on 1/3/2020, 2:48 AM

If the GPU acceleration is deactivated in Vegas, this has no effect on the separate Vegas Capture application. However, the GPU can generally be deactivated in Windows Device Manager. Then the source monitor is shown and the recording works. This shows that the problems lie in the interaction with the GPU.

Thanks matthias-krutz! Disabling GPU in Windows 10 Device Manager is the solution! It works now!

This must be how MAGIX intends this to work.

I know that i can screen cap in OBS without having to disable GPU from the system and it's FREE!

I don't believe I PAID for a capture program that makes me disable GPU int the SYSTEM, capture, then have to quit the program, re-enable GPU and restart the program to use GPU acceleration to edit my vids! Woohoo!

This should go into their Vegas Pro 17 solution to video capture FAQ! ((:

Honestly, Vegas screen capture is a convenience, but not a primary feature... especially when you consider OBS already is more capable than Vegas capture is even when it does work properly. The only thing to gain by buying Vegas just for the purpose of screen capturing would be that you don't have to import the video onto the timeline after it finishes recording, but I can't see how it is worth paying hundreds of dollars to avoid having to make 3-4 mouse clicks to import the video the old fashioned way... Personally, I'd say there are far better reasons to buy Vegas 17, you should explore its other new features. Use OBS until they can sort this out with an update. It works great.

Not to say this issue isn't something that needs immediate attention, but that just seems like a bit of an over-reaction.

@fr0sty

+1

While there is a certain amount of convenience to do screen recordings in V17, OBS has a lot more capabilities including the option for lossless capture if you're interested in getting the highest quality recordings. Capturing to a relatively low bit-rate AVC and having to re-render doesn't seem a good way to maintain quality. Having said that, however, for quick-and-dirty screen recordings of your Vegas workflow for example, it works very well.

Regarding the GPU problem--I have 2 GPU's, an Nvidia card plus the Intel GPU that's part of the processor. There is no need to disable either of the GPU's to get V17 to do screen recordings. Perhaps, it's just an AMD-specific problem. Having to disable your GPU in Windows does not seem like a good solution.

How to do it?

Click Start menu and type Device Manager. Select it.

At the top of the list under Display Adapter, right click on the card and select Disable device.

There are already separate screen capture tools for AMD.

AMD provides the free screen capture program Radeon ReLive for its GPUs and the new Adrenalin 2020 Edition offers even more recording options.

Yea the ATi screen recorder works pretty good.

One handy feature that these screen recorders do not have is the ability to select a custom region on the screen and the recorded file is only those pixels in that recording area.

Anyway, Hopefully they can get this worked out. ((;

After reboot, confirmed that re-enabling Device in Display Adapter / AMD Radeon will cause the screen capture to become inoperative and display a blank screen with only a mouse cursor.

I am also rather bummed this doesn't work as expected.
It was a primary reason I went for the update :(
I have a series of screen recording tutorials to produce, and the timeline import would have been very handy.

On my system, opening Screen Capture only shows my built in WebCam, no displays at all.
I have a nVidia GTX 1070 Qmax, and an Onboard Intel graphics (laptop display only).

Looks good in the Youtube video demo, but its a no go for me now.
Guess this will be the last Vegas upgrade I make, since I can do everything with 3rd party free tools, and am forced to use OBS now anyway.

Then you have to choose in the Nvidia configurationscreen to start that Vegas capture with your Intel

@ryanW – I had to do something with disabling/enabling something to get Xsplit broadcaster working on a laptop. (OBS worked fine out of the box). Sorry I can’t remember what I had to do to fix it but I recall seeing a similar screen to what j-v posted.

It was some nvidia control panel where you can engage or disengage the GPU on an application specific level. My apologize for not being able to be more specific but it was on someone elses laptop – I use a big space heater box computer connected to a wallsocket where I don’t have to worry about any battery saving schemes like on laptops w gpus.

I upgraded to 17 from 15 and I am a happy camper so far. Everything so seems to work much smoother and faster and my 17 suite came with boris FX -- alas, a high quality KEYING solution within Vegas, hallelujah!

I haven’t tried the new screen capture myself and probably never will as I have everything dialed in with OBS and Xsplit.

Not sure if you heard of Xsplit (I hadn’t) but it’s like professional older brother to OBS. I think I pay like $24/month and think its worth it (when it didn’t work on the laptop, tech supported responded in less than an hour with a fix.)

However, I still use OBS for a simple screen captures (simple = no video camera input or changing scenes).

I keep a windows explorer open with where the apps record to. When I am finished, I just drag the file over to the vegas timeline. Couldn’t be much simpler.

Even cooler – I actually use OBS and Xsplit simultaneously on occasion. I record one monitor with OBS and record the input of my DSLR (via elgato camlink) with Xsplit. (all 1080p a 30fps) I would have proclaimed doing such a thing as witchcraft a few years ago – but seems to go off without a hitch with my SSD drives (+ 2070 rtx, 64 gigs ram…)

The DSLR video capture is shot against a green screen. Xsplit does have a built-in live (realtime) keyer which actually does a fairly good job – along with something else called Vcam which keys without a green screen (that’s a whole other topic).. but to pull a really good key you need to do it in post. Plus you then also have the flexibility of having two channels of video (facecam + screencam) that you can cut and mix in post. (xsplit also always for multiple audio track recording)

Which is really what Vegas is all about for me. Editing. I’ve done Premiere & Da Vinci.. nothing is as fast and as intuitive as Vegas.  Recent versions of Xsplit comes with its own built-in video editing software… would I ever use it? Nope. Xsplit/OBS for capture, Vegas for Editing..

No disrespect fr0sty, Really?? I didn't read that this feature was a convenience in the features listing from Magix, VEGAS! Maybe to YOU this is a convenience but many others who have purchase the upgrade expected to be able to us this "feature" and stay within the Vegas environment. Magix has falsely advertised this half baked feature.

@Rudi-Niessen

On my laptop I figured out how to do it with Vegas 17 by switching off the Intel GPU as  Display adapter of the Windows Task Manager.
Before that

and after switching off

You can also try to trigger the settings of the exefile ( copied from within the Vegas installation) on your desktop with the 3D settings in the Nvidia Configurationscreen as a program with or without the Nvidia, to look if something will change.
