This is an ongoing issue. I think it depends if the Laptop screen is a Known standard aspect ratio. An example on my Monitor is that I have the same effect as you. My slightly non standard res on my old monitors is 1680x1050 ( they use to be called widescreen and still work perfect ) which does not work and gives the same effect as you. If I change the Res to 1600x1024 is then works but of course the res if not correct for the screen and does not offer the best overall correct res for these monitor.

Adjust your res and see what setting works, as then as least you will know what the problem is but not the best solution. As you can see in the two pictures, the first one is with my natural res and the second one is where I have changed the res on the Left hand monitor

This is a known issue with monitors that are not of a standard aspect ratio. We have not had an opportunity to resolve this as of yet.
