Screen Capture Video Source screen is Blank

Ed72 wrote on 9/28/2019, 5:57 PM

File/Screen Capture shows only a blank screen under Video Sources, not what is shown on my two monitors. Audio Source meters are shown. Therefore any capture is impossible.

Thanks for your help!

The same thing happens to me with Win 10 and AMD R9 380. I reported it to Magix and received the following answer:

This is a known issue which will be resolved in a future application update. Thank you for reporting this issue.

Vegas Pro 17 Screen Capture is all F*Ked up.

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/screen-capture-not-working--116553/

Many people use other software to screen capture like Camtasia ($250). I use OBS (Free) as many YouTubers use OBS.

harry-worth wrote on 9/30/2019, 2:31 AM

Screen capture does not work. The Line rate of the monitor is different from the capture requirement so just a bunch of almost horizontal lines. Bit of a NON feature. Theer are no adjustment within the Screen Capture. Saw one comment about change your Monitor Frame rates but that is a bit silly..

harry-worth wrote on 9/30/2019, 11:25 AM

Just noticed that Screen Capture does not work on a system with 2 screens,,,,  Can't see a way to tell it to NOT DO THAT

Greg-Carter wrote on 9/30/2019, 9:02 PM

Same on my computer. Half the time the preview window shows my screen, appears to record but the produced video is all black. Or worse, as soon as I hit record the capture preview screen goes black (see screen shot) and I am unable to stop the recording or close the window. All I can do is end the task in task manager.

This is a brand new laptop with top of the line specs (64gigs, RTX 2080 QMax, 4k screen, 8 core i9 CPU).

When I first installed VP17 nothing worked in the capture screen. Since updating to the latest version at least I can see the audio levels working, still a black screen however.

Same here. I7 4200 32 gig ram AMD 480 8 gig ssd and 7200 spinners. Win 10 pro. AMD app is killer capture. VP STILL black screen. Main monitor 4k 50 TV HDMI.

Just tried screen capture for the first time. I have a 2-monitor config. It shows both screens as options to enable recording on so I checked just one of them off. It looks "black" in my capture dialog .. don't know if that's normal. I also enabled the audio for only one audio device where I see levels while playing music. Capture properly recorded the audio as .WAV but the .MP4 files are 0-byte. 😧

Any thoughts? Have to do with video acceleration? Something else? I haven't done too much experimenting to find the source of the problem yet.. wondering if anyone here has run across this already.

I tested again and I have a videofile and one audio file that suites the taken video.
Only the audio is much shorter and not in sync, still not possible to capture also a mouse or so.
Also only possible to record in 30fps.
I don't use it till it is getting better with more possibilities.

Someone posted elsewhere here that the problem occurs with AMD video cards which, of course, many of us use because up until recent versions those were the recommended card for best performance. I'd love to see the capture tool working with AMD cards as it should... clearly it's a bug which renders this feature completely unusable for ppl with AMD cards.

Screen capture was one of the main reasons I purchased VP 17 and it doesn't work for me either which is a huge disappointment since FREE software like OBS works great. I primarily wanted to keep basic screen capture within Vegas and use OBS for higher res/fps captures.

Seems like typical marketing. They know it doesn't work on ATI platforms and released it half baked. Hope they get this resolved with the next update.

harry-worth wrote on 2/23/2020, 7:24 AM

Just found out something.. My Dual screen system with - 2 - 1680x1050 only produces horizontal line ( like line sync slip on a TV ). If I change the screen res for the capture screen to 1440x900 then that screen appears normal in the capture image..

Is it that only Low Res display settings will work. So I have my main Vegas layout on one screen in 1680x1050 and the other screen in 1440x900 if I want to capture anything on that screen.

Camtasia work is all resolution.. Not sure if anyone else has found this problem..?

Vegas sees my video card, but does not pull in any input from the cameras. Just a blank screen.

I have dual monitors on an AMD RX 6800XT and Vegas screen capture works fine with the Windows installed driver. But as soon as I install Adrenalin, it stops working, just blank screens. I found that Windows kept replacing Adrenalin software, but as the installed driver (currently 31.0.12027.7000) works fine with Vegas and I don't play games, I've just left it. And the added benefit is that capture works too.

Just started happening on my old laptop (very old). I got a new brand new gaming laptop and opened up my Vegas 19.0 software and it worked (with exception of my laptop screen registering, but my external screens and camera worked). Then when I restarted the computer, blank screen.

Same thing happened when I downloaded the Vegas Pro 21.0 trial version. It worked the 1st time (without laptop screen showing up), I updated the drivers that required a restart and now I'm getting a totally blank Vegas Capture.

How were other people able to fix this? Anything I find on the internet hasn't worked yet. Has anyone had success or talk to customer service with success?

This is one of the main reasons why I have using Movie Studio or Vegas for the past 10 years. This is has been very frustrating for the past couple of weeks. It was just working a few weeks ago just fine on my old laptop. I thought it was my old laptop that was the issue, it seems not.

Some system information.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU

13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13620H, 2400 Mhz, 10 Core(s), 16 Logical Processor(s)

Installed Physical Memory (RAM)    32.0 GB
BIOS Version/Date    American Megatrends International, LLC. E17L5IMS.113, 10/26/2023

UPDATE: Not a great solution (not sure if I would invest in VEGAS 21.0 unless this gets fixed, I may look into downgrading to the more economic Movie Studio), but if I open up the Vegas Capture.exe from the folder enough times, one of them will work. AND BONUS, I even see my laptop screen!

RogerS wrote on 4/5/2024, 9:05 PM

You may need to revert your GPU driver to the last one provided by the manufacturer. I haven't found capture reliable on my laptop and would use other free software that's more robust.

This same thing happened with Vegas 19 before I updated anything. I thought it was because I needed a newer version (thus trying out VEGAS 21.0), but it responded the same.

I don't think that is a solution. I'm looking for the solution to this problem, not "use something else", but noted. I used OBS to video VEGAS Capture not working. I paid for VEGAS and would like it work.

RogerS wrote on 4/5/2024, 10:20 PM

Please share your GPU driver versions- find it in windows device manager/ graphics adapters and VEGAS help/ driver update.

I'm not sure there is a fix within VEGAS as it seems to rely on Windows drivers. For me I can capture cameras connected to my laptop but not the laptop screen. I'm no longer using Dell drivers (they haven't been updated in years) but one from Intel directly.

For my desktop I'm able to only capture one of my two monitors, the other one looks corrupted.

If I really need to do this I use VEGAS Stream (no longer available) or other software. If I were you I wouldn't waste time with a feature that doesn't work well and just use OBS.
