Script for Text event changes

Goji wrote on 6/7/2009, 4:24 PM
Hope someone can help . .

I have 1200, yes TWELVE HUNDRED, text events which I would like to add outline to.

Is this some thing that a script could be written for?

If you're wondering how I got myself in this spot . . . I'm subtitling person with a laryngectomy, who is also a motivational speaker. 1200 text events in a 45 minute presentation. Took 15-20 hours to enter.

Help . . please!

Greg

What are you doing it in?
With subtitles In DVDA, you can.
In Vegas, you can't.

Add regions around your text events then use the "export regions as subtitles" script that comes with Vegas.

Excellent workaround blink.
Thanks.

Well it's great little script which I use all the time. BTW... if you need to fine tune your subtitle file after you export from Vegas, then just temporarily change the extension from SUB to TXT and then open it up in Microsoft word (or similar).... and away you go. Just remember to change the extension back to SUB after you save (as TXT) from word.

Next time do it all in Microsoft Word then save it as TXT (dos, unicode) then change the extension to SUB and import as subtitle to DVDa... it would be a lot faster this way. The format needs to be:

0000 (tab) 00:00:00:00 (tab) 00:00:15:52 (tab) YOUR TEXT HERE

0001 (tab) 00:00:15:52 (tab) 00:00:33:53 (tab) YOUR TEXT HERE

0002 (tab) 00:00:33:53 (tab) 00:00:36:54 (tab) YOUR TEXT HERE

0003 (tab) 00:00:36:54 (tab) 00:00:41:54 (tab) YOUR TEXT HERE

0004 (tab) 00:00:41:54 (tab) 00:01:30:09 (tab) YOUR TEXT HERE

0005 (tab) 00:01:30:09 (tab) 00:02:17:64 (tab) YOUR TEXT HERE

0006 (tab) 00:02:17:64...........

Assuming all your text events are on the one track:

Track header, 2D Track Motion. Tick Drop Shadow. Change X and Y Offset to 0. Set Blur to 1, Color to whatever you like (black?). Adjust Intensity to taste. Job done.

It's not exactly the same as adding an outline in the text event's properties but should be more than adequate for your needs. You cannot Paste text events properties however you can paste FXs i.e. Select all your text events and paste an FX to them. If the above doesn't work for you try finding an FX that gives you what you're after and use that. From my quick test the 2D Drop Shadow works well enough.

Hey, thanks everybody.

Farss, your solution is the one that I chose . . . beautiful!

I was just considering as a tweak to Bob's solution, that as the FULL Track Fx-ing give increases to the Render times, how about making an FX saved Plug-Filter-Chain and then use just that as an FX to the Events? This would mean that the FX rendering isn't being applied to the whole track, but rather the individual Events thereby reducing the render times?

Does this have merit?

I tried to see if I could get that idea to fly however I couldn't find an FX that'd quite do the outline as well as the track drop shadow.

Regardless I think Vegas is pretty smart of late. If all Goji has on the track is the text then Vegas only spends time rendering what's there. I think it used not to be like this. Apply somethings to a 99% empty track and Vegas would slow down for the whole render adding an FX to nothing to produce nothing to composite onto whatever was below.

Yeah, you are absolutely correct Bob. I was thinking I could do a drop shadow thru' SOME form of FX - not possible.

And I didn't know Vegas had gotten smarter on areas of empty track. Now that IS a bonus!
