Script to adjust audio changes

Here's the problem: I have an industrial shoot with the "talent" on wireless mic. There are at least six other people following along during the shoot, several of whom ask questions.

The talent audio is fine at 0db; the questions need to come in at about +4.9db to be heard. This means continual adjustment of the volume envelope, up and down. Lots of clicking and pulling. Since there is a good deal of audio overlapping, pulling out the questions audio to a separate track isn't practical.

Does anyone know of a script that will enable the automatic resetting of volume? What would be ideal would be a radio button to jump to a preset db (in this case+4db,) a second radio button to jump back to another preset (0.0db.)

Any thoughts?

Search on "Audio Track Automation" in the Vegas help and see if that feature might do what you want. Essentially, as I understand it (I've seen it demoed, but never used it myself), you ride the volume up and down, in real time, as you listen, and Vegas creates the volume envelope that matches your commands. All you have to do after that is go back and touch up what you've done.

Heck, I just tried it. Yup, it works great. See if it gets you close to what you want and then post again. Others may have modifications to my advice as to how to improve the workflow.

This script function can be found in Ultimate S3 but it was originally a free script called Quick Envelope that is still available on the VASST web site.

Have you looked at The Levelator? It's designed for this very purpose, and it's FREE.

From the website: http://www.gigavox.com/levelator

"So what is The Levelator? It's software that runs on Windows or OS X (universal binary) that adjusts the audio levels within your podcast or other audio file for variations from one speaker to the next, for example. It's not a compressor, normalizer or limiter although it contains all three. It's much more than those tools, and it's much simpler to use. The UI is dirt-simple: Drag-and-drop any WAV or AIFF file onto The Leveler's application window, and a few moments later you'll find a new version which just sounds better."
