scrolling credits image quality

I am creating a video with scrolling credits over a noise/moving backdrop. When I render the clip as an MPEG2 with "best" quality for video, the lettering is rough around the edges. In the preview window before rendering, it looks good (letters are real smooth) only when I select Preview (Auto) or Good (Auto). If I select Best (Auto) for the preview window quality, the same thing happens to the text. What is causing this and how can I get around this because I want to use "Best" quality for the final rendor. Should I rendor the credits to a new track and then rendor the whole thing to the final cut? Thanks in advance for any help!!

What are you previewing the video on?

How do you watch it after the render?

Perhaps it is the viewing mechanism and not the video at all.

This is probley something you won't be able to fix unless you put a border around your letters. It's the nature of mpeg compression (just look at big black spaces on DVD movies).

But.. you could render the section out as a DV AVI at good quality to a new track, then render the whole thing with that rendered part (if, like you said, it only looks bad in best mode).

I don't have much experience with the credits produced by Vegas, but check and see if non-moving credits look good.

The reason I ask is because, when you do rolling credits on an interlaced TV, you can get all sorts of odd effects due to the fact that the letters are moving up. In other words, if you choose a wrong speed, the letters seem to have an undulation to them, or even become half as sharp vertically. If this describes the effect, they try a different vertical speed.
