Scrolling Titles

Caruso wrote on 9/23/2001, 4:45 AM
Perhaps I'm dense . . . doesn't matter.
I'm trying to create a title overlay that will scroll so that text moves onto the screen from the bottom, and scrolls vertically off the top of the viewing area.

I've succeeded in getting the text to scroll, but, it always goes from top to bottom.

I read the help file on this, and, based on my understanding, this is what I've been doing:

I create a separate video track.
Go to insert and select Generated Media, then, Sonic Foundry Text.

I create my text.

I then go to the track motion screen, pull the dot in the center of that screen to the bottom (beyond the safe hash marks) as my starting point, click on the position row to select some future time in my production, move the dot from it's bottom position to the top, click the plus sign inside the diamond to add a second (ending) keyframe, close the window, and preview the result.

The title always moves from top to bottom.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't know much about titles, but I was thinking... maybe you could render the title in reverse into a separate AVI format? That way it'll go backwards, from bottom to top instead? I don't know if that'll work. It's probably pretty tedious, I'm sure.

Well, I continue to play with it, but admit, I'm presently at a loss. I've tried reversing the position "dot", so that, according to my understanding, I would be setting the thing up to run from top to bottom, and, lo and behold, it runs from top to bottom. If I set it up to run from bottom to top, it still runs from top to bottom.

I'll be waiting on advise from someone on this.

Thanks in advance, and, Rockaway, thanks for your reply as well.

Caruso,

I was just about to post a message about scrolling titles...my problem is not the scrolling direction, my titles go from bottom to top:

Once you open the Pan/Crop area, set the crop box above your first title and match with your first keyframe. Next move the box just below your last title and set your last keyframe marker...works for me.

My problem is the lenght of my scrolling titles:

I created titles on a separate track using first V.V. Video Media Generator and then a second time in Text Media. I opened Event Pan/Crop and set the track to scroll vertically but I can only get a small portion of the titles to show: I created a long scrolling list of credits but not all created titles in Media Generator will appear in the Pan Crop “black box”. How can I expand the box so all titles are displayed.?

Big thanks there G.G.
I just did a 7000x480 graphic pan and it worked great.
I also passed the info on to the Video Factory Forum.
Cool stuff.

I have seen a couple of third party titling plugins packages that work with Adobe Premier. Can any of these packages be used with VV?

4 things about scrolling credits:

1) Text generator events are created at the project size by default, but can be modified after the fact. Right click the text event, go to "edit generator media" and adjust the frame size- you can create "long" title events, up to 2048 pixels, which will tripple your credit roll length

2) Consider using a push transition and multiple text events. Push each event up and off frame. This lets you string together unlimited text events for endlessly long credit rolls.

3) Create a long credit roll graphic in an external image editor like photoshop. If you save an alpha channel with the image (as a png, tga etc) Vegas will pick up that alpha and you can easily key it.

4) Finally, VideoFactory 2 has its own credit roll generator. A modified version of this will show up in Vegas 3 (but you can't use it in Vegas 2). Check out the VideoFactory 2 demo for a sneak preview (and puck up some free fx while you're at it). No need to buy this- just install the demo.

Hey, thanks for the input. I really have been playing around with this, but, not getting anywhere. Don't know what pushing is, and my titles are moving backwards.

I wonder if someone could choose their favorite technique and list it, step by step.

Sorry to be so dense, but, on this one issue, well . . . I'm just dense.

Thanks in advance.

I have copied and saved your instructions. Will try them and let you know if it works for me.

Thanks so much for taking the time to explain this.

Thanks for indulging me. Followed your step-by-step and it worked like a charm. I have since re-read the entire thread, and I see that you had actually explained things in a shorter form earlier, I just didn't get it from that initial post.

I still don't understand the difference between event pan/crop and track motion, nor why, when following (or trying to follow) the suggestions in the VV help file, I get a title that moves from bottom to center frame using track motion. Maybe someone can offer further input on that.

Thanks again to all for your input.
