Sounds good.... too bad I HATE pp, but I will say that THIS is the direction I think Sony SHOULD be heading. This "all software" approach is just not necessary anymore and it will hurt Vegas sooner or later.

For sure.

I had a conversation on this subject with the Sony Vegas rep at NAB a couple of years ago and didn't even get to first base. Sony seems committed to a software only approach which will, in these days of high compression algorithms, leave them trailing those who utilize an Nvidia graphics card processor for hardware acceleration. As much as I dislike Premier Pro (don't ask why - it's a horror story) I am going to have to give it a look if Adobe has a real time AVCHD solution. That is a very, very big deal for me.

I wonder how difficult it would actually be to incorporate GPU render acceleration into Vegas? While I have always applauded Vegas' software-only approach, it would be nice to take advantage of the serious horsepower of a graphics GPU.

Besides, Vegas isn't completely software-based, there are basic hardware requirements, just add a relatively recent Nvidia or ATI graphics card to the list.

For that matter, pretty much anyone running Vista64 is doing it on pretty modern hardware, as long as SCS is maintaing both 32 and 64-bit versions of Vegas, maybe they could incorporate GPU support into the 64-bit version and leave it out of the 32-bit version.

Hmm... I looked up and according to Wikipedia:

"The Video for Windows technology was mostly replaced by the July 1996 release of its COM-based successor - ActiveMovie - first released as a beta version along with the second beta of Internet Explorer 3.0."

Are the VFW functions now handled by DirectX?

The hardware issue is bound to really come up with the introduction of the Nehalem platform. It manages resources a lot differently than the 775 CPU platform. It's increased performance may also make the shared resource unnecessary.

I thought ATI usually loads the CPU for additional GPU power, rather than the other way around.
