Scrubber bar

I am making the switch from Pinnacle Studio 7 to VideoFactory, actually Screenblast, and have a question for any VideoFactory user. In Studio 7 I used the scrubber bar a lot in editing my home movies. When I moved the scrubber bar the video showing in the preview window moved as well. Does VideoFactory have a similar feature? I downloaded the demo version of VideoFactory 2.0 but cannot seem to get this to work. I would really miss this feature. By the way, I am switching mostly due to the Video FX that VideoFactory has to offer. Thanks for any help you can give me.

You can move backwards and forwards on the time line using the arrow keys. If you want the scrubber have a look at this.

As an ex Studio user myself I think you'll find VF has a lot more to offer than just the video fx!

Hiyah Ian! - Do the "J,K,L" keys work in VF? I'm in a Vegas4 session at the moment - needed a break and cruised over here for a bit of relief - otherwise I'd have tried it out.

J and K don't appear to do anything. L toggles looped playback on and off.

Chris,

There are lots of us who came here from Studio 7. VideoFactory does things a little differently but don’t be afraid to come here and ask how things work. The post that IanG referred to tells you how to turn the scrubber on and if you just drag on the timeline it will scrub as well. To scrub with sound (something Studio can’t do) you place your mouse over the cursor on the timeline and hold the control key (Ctrl- ) you will see the mouse cursor turn into an icon of a speaker with a two headed arrow. Now, just left click and drag back and forth to scrub video and audio.

You’re gonna love VideoFactory.

The answer may be obvious when I try it, but what advantage is there to scrubbing the audio? Does it give me anything I can't get from the waveform?

Sometimes it just helps to hear where you are. This is especially true if you're scrubbing large sections and searching for some specific audio cue. I don't know about you, but i haven't learned to "hear" the sound from looking at the waveform display ... yet ... getting close though ;)

Actually i often freak out one of my fellow techs at church while editing the service recording. He'll see me highlight a short section and cut it out without listening. He asks what that was and i'll say a cough or a sneeze or whatever. He can't understand how i know that just by looking. Just pattern recognition, i guess.

Point taken! And no, I can't "hear" the waveform either, though I can get a reasonable idea of what's going on.

Cheers

Sorry, I don't have a clue what is being discussed here - but I am interested, and intrigued. When I hold down the control key and click on the beginning of a waveform, I don't get a speaker icon (as mentioned) but a squiggly line does appear.

As far as effect - the only thing I notice when I click and drag while that squiggly line appears is that the entire waveform appears to simply stay in place as I move it around (rather than changing the beginning point as would happen without holding down CTRL) - and that is what happens if I simply click inside the waveform and drag it around.

So what am I missing here? "Scrubber" sounds like it should have something to do with cleaning up a sound file or something....

sdgates, what you've found is the way to speed up or slow down a clip. Try doing the same thing but start somewhere in the middle of the clip instead of at the ends.

Thanks. I was beginning to cotton on to what "scrubber" really was late last night while going through various postings. Previously I have been clicking the green FX "button" that appears on video clips. Then, once the Video Even Properties window pops up, I click on the General tab and make adjustments to the Playback rate. I'll need to try the "scrubber" option. Maybe it'll make readjustments go quicker.

The only thing I have used rate adjustment for so far is 1. - To create a little slo-mo background video of the subject behind and during a title sequence, and 2. - To "create" some extra video "footage" within a video by stretching out the time that an announcer was standing on stage. All of this was simply to enable the adding of a decent transition between the announcer and the following dance recital. (This was necessary because there was an unexpected delay - so I placed the camera on standby. Then the action started up again too quickly and I was left with no extra "quiet time" between the announcer and the start of the act. That'll teach me to never go to standby!)

This is a great forum, by the way!

Hiyah!

1 - Slomo - Rest mouse cursor over an end of the the video clip. See the Double Headed Arrow. Hold down Ctrl key, hold down left mouse button and ssssttttrech that clip [ a la Jane Fonda aerobics video - yeah! ]

2 - Fastmo - You got it! Instead of stttreching clip Squeeeeeeze the clip - ie move the configuration I spoke up towards the begining of the clip - yeah?

NEAT EH! - Mighty powerful s/w VF!
