Scrubbing and timeline playback dropping out, or "hanging"

I've got a problem that seemed solved, but is returning too frequently to ignore:

I'm on XP SP1, a dual 1.6ghz AMD rig, gig of ram...and timeline playback and trimmer scrubbing drops out occasionally. I figured it might be a fragmented drive issue, but have defragged the same drive twice in the past week.

The timeline issue hasn't re-appeared today, but scrubbing through the trimmer drops out, leaving Vegas waiting on an hour glass for about 30 seconds, and does this once in three clips -- give or take.

Any who've tackeld this have suggested remedies?

Funny enough the hangups are with media without audio. Though, just in case, I switched from the default microsoft sound driver to the direct sound driver. Still hangs >:(
