SD Card Formatting

When it's necessary to format a standard SD Memory card, is it OK to use the Windows format function, or is a "special" formatting preferred. If so, what is it?

Windows formatting works fine.

Usually just poping it into whichever camera you are using and letting it decide has worked the best for me.

I have been told that if you have a choice, formatting the cards in a PC is slightly better.
