SD in an HD timeline

I'm using Vegas 9 (64 bit) and I have an HDV 60i timeline with footage from an XH A1s and a GL2. The GL2 is mainly a just a B cam for cutaways and I've just stretched it out to 16:9, not ideal I know...anyway I find playback of SD footage in my HD timeline is horrible, the playback rate is around 15fps and the HD stays at a solid 29.97.

Is there anyway around this or do I have to create a letterboxed SD timeline? Final output is just a downconverted DVD, I'd prefer to have it at least 16:9 though.

That's a LOT of work to preview each frame.

You need to render the SD to HD.

If the final output is SD (a DVD) then you'd be converting the SD footage twice. Wouldn't it be better to convert the HD to SD?

If to 4:1:1 NTSC DV, you get all that HD 4:2:0 goodness cut to 4:1:0, before rendering to the DVD's 4:2:0.

The end result will look better if he stays in HD.

He could render to uncompressed SD. That is 4:2:2, so wouldn't cut out his color, but depending on how much grading he does, it still won't look as good as staying in HD.
