I had the same issue. Unfortunately the only fix I had myself was a brand new fresh Windows 10 installation. I had all AMD hardware though, so this looks to not be AMD specific as I first thought.

Dave-Conner wrote on 8/6/2020, 8:54 PM

It is a brand new machine bought specifically for video editing the only program the computer is VEgas pro 17 suite and Vegas pro 18 suite. As I mentioned 17 works without a problem 18 the second screen preview goes black and crashes 18.

I don't know what to tell ya. I was annoyed at having to wipe my system after spending countless hours meticulously setting up every piece of software and plugins for Vegas. Is this a pre-built PC? Did you build it yourself? Can you try installing Windows 10 from scratch again on it? My PC is also very purpose built for video editing. That's the only advice I can give. I hope someone else chimes in with a real fix. Then I could restore that backup of my system again that has everything I ever wanted on it.

Dave-Conner wrote on 8/7/2020, 6:06 AM

It is a store bought top of the line laptop 4K screen.

Disappointing that 17 worked without a problem and 18 does not work. I have been with Vegas since the Sony days and the software always seems to have a glitch to work out. If you hear of a real fix drop me a line. Thanks

redpaw wrote on 8/12/2020, 12:54 PM

@Dave-Conner  exact same thing started to happening to me after (i think) the windows update i did today... vegas 18 crashes with black screen on secondary screen. v17/16/15 all work fine :/

Really annoying! Went through different video drivers, no change and dont really have time now for a new windows install.

Dave-Conner wrote on 8/12/2020, 3:09 PM

Submitted a question to Vegas about 7 days ago still .k response. Iwent the driver route also no luck. My machine is new with only Vegas 17 and 18 Installed. For this caliber of program this is BS

Let's get some info. Redpaw, if you could do the same, that'll help even more.

What are your project settings?

What is your windows 10 version? (i.e. "Version    10.0.18363 Build 18363
" search for "system information" to find out)

What is your GPU driver version number? (you can find that in your GPU driver's control panel)

Hi @fr0sty

soo...
- Windows 10 version 2004 build 19041.450

- nvidia 451.77 [studio], but also tried 451.67 [game ready] and tried uninstalling all nvidia drivers and letting windows install their default version.

AMD Ryzen 3900x  /  64GB ram  / RTX2070SUPER  /  2 screens run by DP

however i've found a workaway - going through any weird things that come to mind worth trying - i've swapped the position of the screens - as i have the following setup: [ 2 ] [ 1 ]
So, if i have vegas on screen 2 - and trying to preview it on screen one - it crashes... but if it's the other way around, and i move the main vegas window to screen 1 and set up the preview monitor to screen 2 - it all works fine! @Dave-Conner - could you check if that's also the case with your configuration?

---edit:
now, the funny bit is, when i swapped he cables to have [ 1 ][ 2 ] - it didnt help, now i need to have vegas main window on screen 2 and preview on screen 1 for it to work - so no matter what the preview has to be on the left hand side... dont think that makes any sense. (the default screen is now obviously set to 1)

fr0sty wrote on 8/13/2020, 5:43 AM

Thanks for reporting your success. Let's try to reproduce that on another system. I'll make sure the right folks see this.

redpaw wrote on 8/13/2020, 6:14 AM

that would be great. i wouldnt call it a success though - i still have no way of setting it up in a way that i have vegas main window on the left and preview on the right, so back to v17 for me for now.

*not 100% sure, but i remember that i believe there was similar (if not the exact same) issue when vegas 17 was released. will try to do some digging later on, have some work to do first

Dave-Conner wrote on 8/13/2020, 9:45 AM

If I reverse the displays I can get a second screen, however I need Vegas on the main screen of the laptop i do not need to look over my shoulder.

Any help would be appreciated, again previous versions worked just fine.

redpaw wrote on 8/14/2020, 2:49 PM

@Dave-Conner - so, finally I've found the solution to the preview and artifacts in effects/transitions/media windows - as found here: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/ui-issues-in-vegas-18--123149/
the Asus Sonic Suite was mentioned as it might cause the issue, after uninstalling it the preview problem is gone, and at least that part works fine now. Is your an Asus laptop by any chance ?

Dave-Conner wrote on 8/14/2020, 3:06 PM

Mine is a gigbyte hdr 17

fr0sty wrote on 8/14/2020, 3:59 PM

Goes to show, sometimes it isn't a VEGAS stability issue causing the problem, but rather an external influence creating incompatibility. Hang in there Dave, we'll get you sorted. Redpaw, glad your issue has been at least mostly resolved.

another success story:

@VEGASPascal suggested that I update my AMD driver and he said to use the “Pro Software For Enterprise” version.  When I updated, it was actually an older version  20.4.2 compared to what I originally had.  I had the "optional choice" installed on my computer of v. 20.8.1.  When I updated to the older version of 20.4.2, it made my system run really slow and scroll bars were freezing up etc.  So, I went ahead and updated back to my original version of 20.8.1.  After that, I decided to uninstall those two programs "Sonic Radar 3" and "Sonic Studio 3" off of my system as @VEGASPascal had mentioned them previously.  Then, when I executed Vegas Pro 18, I wanted to try the external monitor again and THIS TIME, IT WORKED!!  I was so surprised!! Yay!! I think it was these two aforementioned programs that I uninstalled were the very thing that made my external monitor work since @VEGASPascal said they were known to cause issues.  There was another person here who said they had the same problem with a black screen on their external monitor too when using Vegas Pro 18.  But now, that’s been fixed for me!  Thank you for this suggestion @VEGASPascal of removing those programs. And @set the timing you mentioned about these two programs couldn't have come at a better time! THANK YOU!!

I created a help Ticket over a week ago so far silence

Give it time. We are in a pandemic, there may be a backlog. Hopefully someone responds to the ticket soon, or a dev is able to respond here to help.

Same problem here. When I try to preview on a second screen the second screen goes black and eventually Vegas pro 18 crashes, even in a new project with only 1 clip. Everything worked well in Vegas 17.

Windows 10, Core i7-9700, 16 GB RAM, Nvidia RTX 2060.

Dave-Conner wrote on 8/16/2020, 8:38 AM

So far I have no solution. My machine is brand new, core I9, 32 gig memory all the good stuff and cannot get the second screen working and then Vegas crashes.

Like you 17 works fine hopefully someone knows how to fix this as anyone can see it is not an isolated incident.
