See-Through Text (again!)

garo wrote on 2/10/2005, 1:41 AM
Am unsuccessful in creating the see-through text thingy - Using SPOT's book =
1. Make three tracks
2. Place Text on Track 1 and make Track 2 "Child" by clicking on the arrow

So what I have now is Track one with no indication on arrow
Track 2 arrow pointing downward
Track 3 Arrow pointing upward
The text is visable as white and I only see Track 2 under/in back of it

At one point I inserted a fourth track above them all since this was/is a bug sometimes but that didn't eliviate the problem

TIA, Garo

What version & build of V5 are you on? I gotta a feeling this is the inter track issue I stumbled on sometime back. Could be?

You didn't set the compositing mode on the text track to Multiply (Mask).

This procedure is fully documented for Vegas 4 and Vegas 5 in two issues of my newsletter.

I had the same problem when following that procedure in the book. I figured it out by importing a veg from vasst and tearing it apart. Kelly, that was a great way to teach us rookies.

Sorry - still don't get it - Vegas 5.0b
(jetdv - you have to be able to actually find the particular newsletter - gave up there!)

Anyone willing to give a hint in the right direction? Whats wrong with SPOT's book that it wouldn't work?

1. Make three tracks
2. Place Text on Track 1 and make Track 2 "Child" by clicking on the arrow
3. Place video on track 3 and make parent.
4. Select "multiply (mask) on track 1
Track 1 arrow upward
Track 2 arrow pointing downward
Track 3 Arrow pointing upward

EDIT click on the arrows to make them grey-out as above
Track 2 and 3 are "source alpha"

Garo, did you look at the picture i posted? That should show you everything you need to know. You were only missing one tiny step, which is to set the composting mode on the text track to Multiply (Mask).

Vol 2, #5 to be specific for Vegas 5
Vol 2, #3 for the same task in Vegas 4

Nothing wrong in the book, it might be my language isn't clear to some...
There are several veg files that demonstrate how to do this, it's very easy.
Track 1 has text.
Track 2 has generated media or video.
Track 2 is child of track 1
Track 1 has a composite mode of Multiply/Mask.

There are examples of this on the DVD in the back of the book, too.
I just sent you an example from the V5 book.

I edited my post if it makes it any clearer.

Garo, can you send me your .veg file? I don't need any media at all, just the .veg file and nothing else. If you're willing, please email it to testbench at vegasusers dot com. Thanks!

SPOT: thanks for the .veg it worked great and BTW I did catch the sner/implications concerning my language abilities ..! :-)

Plus thanks to you others I managed to do it myself on another file - I get so frustrated with myself when I can't do the simple stuff!!

Thanks one and all!!
