Seeking advice on scanner purchase

Presently I am using a camera to input into Vegas photos and slides. I'd like to shift to a scanner. I have been unhappy with my experience to date, especially using flat bed scanners with slide attachments. I've been looking at the new H-Ps, but the reviews by experts and users have been really down on the software, reporting banding and high noise.

What are you folks using with great success? Is anybody using a scanner with some other Twain software? How about separate scanners for photod and slides.

All help appreciated. Jjack

I have scanned close to 20,000 negatives and slides with two different Nikon slide scanners. I am very happy with the results and with their support. Bought them at B&H.

I have an HP 5500C. I detest the software but there is good integration with Photoshop. For large montages I appreciate the auto photo feeder. Works well but not without problems. Scan quality is good but does pick up some noise and could use an interior cleaning.

It also came with a negative/slide scanner but I have not really had an opportunity to use this. I have only scanned pictures.
