Seemingly Simple Thing I want to Do

OK, up front I am not an expert at SMS. I want to do something that seems like a very simple thing. I have a new project and I have imported a few dozen video/audio clips and placed them on the timeline. Now I want to go from left to right on the timeline, make selections (one at a time), and cut out these selected pieces ***AND*** I want ALL clieps to the right of what I just cut to "slide" over to fill the gap. I have tried everything and every mode I can think of and just can't see how this is done. I don't wnat to have to select every clip to the right with each cut and drag it. I don't groups since I don;t think that will work. I just want the clips to the right to slide over to fill the gap. Seems simple, seems doable.

Plase help!!

Make sure ripple edits are enabled and use the normal edit tool.

To delete a clip, double-click on it to highlight across all clips, and then hit delete (you can also do this on blank sections).

To make a new selection and then delete it, click and drag in the area above the time line to make a selection, or hold down the shift key and use the arrow keys to make a selection, then hit delete.

The key in both cases is to make a selection across all clips.

OK, I see ripple edits handles deletes fine. How do I get the same "ripple" effect when I want to slide ALL clips to the right over. For example, I want to slide clips 3-N (last) over to the left such that clip 3 transitions over the end of clip 2. When I do this now (slide clip 3 over to the left), clips 4-N will not "stick" and come with clip 3 as I drag it to the left. Instead, I am left with a gap between 3 and 4 and when I drag 4 to the left, the gap is now between 4 and 5 and so on.

Right click event 3 and press v (select to end) and then everything from 3-n sticks together and can be moved nicely.

Or if the space between tracks 2 and 3 is completely blank (nothing on any of the other tracks), double-click on the blank area between the clips and hit delete.

First select all the clips to the right of the clip you want to work on, say clip 3.
Press the g key to group the selected clips.
Edit clip 3 and dellete the out takes then move it into position against clip 2.
On the tool bar click the icon Ignore Event Grouping.
Move clip 4 to the left and edit it then move it against clip 3.
Click Ignore Event Grouping to turn it off.
Move clip 5 and the rest against clip 4.

Does this help?

PaulS and ritsmer -- very good and useful advice - thank you very much. ritsmer - your advice about the right-click-v was exactly what I needed for getting everything to the right of an event to follow along with a left-drag. It still bugs me that very little of this is in the User's Manual along with simple tutorials - most of what I am doing is simple stuff that many beginners want to do. I spent hours doing this the hard way and with a few simple commands I can save a lot of time.

Thanks again - I have found this forum very useful.
