Selecting all layers

Does anyone know how to select all the layers i.e. text, video, music, etc. so that I can move them all together. I often add clips half way through the video so I put the "time cursor" thing (the vertical line that you use to view the time line, I don't know what it's called) at the end of the video and go back to where I want to add the clip, hold down shift and move all the video and audio up a bit but I have to re-allign the text afterwards. If I keep shift held down and try to highlight the text it unhighlights the video.

Go to the Edit drop-down and choose the Selection Tool. This converts your cursor into a tool that you can use to drag a lasso around any or all of your clips and layers and move them as a group. (You can also add a button to your Toolbar for this useful tool to make it easier to access.)

One thing you can do is this:

Select the clip/item that occupies the top-left-most item of the things you want to select. (Presumably, this will be the left-most text or video clip on the top video track)

Scroll to the end of the timeline and shift-click (or is it ctrl-click?) the bottom-right-most item. (Premably the right-most audio clip from the bottom audio track.)

This will more or less select everything in between across all intervening tracks. Hit G for group (optional) and move them around.

This only "really" works if the last item on your bottom track is also the last item in the time line.

You can always ctrl-click other items that don't get selected as a group to include them in the group before moving them all.
